I've been wondering about this a bit. The Wii has managed to involve the more casual gamers (and other hardcore ones, though they haven't been adressed that much) with its witty simplicity and revolutionary gameplay devices, so it has guaranteed its permanence. The Xbox 360 is a horrendous piece of hardware with an insane failure rate. It isn't, in fact, nothing but an updated version of the old Xbox: not precisely next-gen, just a console with a bigger functionality and nicer graphics. But it's gathered a huge fanbase based only on the great game titles it has released. IMO, the X360 just proves that Microsoft is more of a mindless business than a technological developer. But, yeah, its games are awesome, if nothing truly new.
The PS3 is an awesome console that has a vast amount of potential, but game developers don't seem to be very interested in exploiting it. So far, it's been working just as the X360, only updating the old titles, without creating anything revolutionary. Most of the old Sony exclusives have gone multiplatform, and people are turned off by the PS3's high prices. The only game that seems to exploit more the console's potential and push the gaming development a bit further is MGS4. Hopefully it will be a turning point for the PS3, but it's still uncertain.
What do you guys think? Will game developers keep sticking to the old formulas or will they risk it and start releasing truly original things? Because if they do, I think the PS3 and the Wii are the only consoles with the capacity to do so. How long will we have to wait?
