Although still unattractive i see some people have changed theirs to a slightly less garish colour (Purple, Green etc) how do you do this?

Go to your profile and you will see the colour bar.

anyway, on the buddy list, select your PSN name to view your profile. Once you do, you should immediately see a color pane on the upper left side of the profile card. Simply select it, and pick your color.

EDIT: oh, you're getting a trophy sync error... wait a little while and then try again...

by any chance did you change your password/user-name recently?

worst case scenario, you might have to delete this account and then re-install it...
