The Marketing Of PS3. Do You Think It Failed?

From a financial standpoint, it would be hard to argue that the PS3 did remarkably well when it was released. I mean, they made it impossible to get, and released it for $600 a year after the XB360 and alongside the cheaper Nintendo Wii.

Not to mention, the launch titles weren't that great. But if you are a fan of Sony, like I am, it is hopeful that they will regain some ground when the bread winner games come out. Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy etc. Though I am worried that based on the poor launch, that if Sony doesn't recover fast, it may go the way of the Dreamcast.

And BTW, if anyone is trying to take over the gaming industry it's Nintendo. They abandoned the gamers for a broader audience.

Why the marketing failed....

1. The ads were creepy. Seriously, they gave me nightmares. Baby dolls crying, then their tears rolling back into their eyes, making weird mewling noises.... shudder.... Those ads did NOT make me want to get a PS3.

2. They priced the console too high

3. They didn't release the games to justify the price

4. They have pretty bad PR. People hate excessive spin, and Sony lays it on pretty think. Just say 'the plan for our console is a long-term one. The console is doing fine now, and we are on track to carry out policies that will get it a lot of great games and features to be the best console ever.' People would stop ripping on you then.

5. No flagship title. This is related to the no content, but specifically, there is no Gears of War or Halo 3 to rally consumers behind the console. MGS4 should do this to some extent, except that it doesn't have much apeal in the mainstream public.

6. Wrong advertising focus. Pushed it as a bluray player when it needed to be pushed as a games machine.

other stuff too, most of it complicated, but thsoe are the basics.

You've failed.

Yep definately bad marketing.Lately theres been some-"This is Living" ads in papers,but they're totally bland+boring.You wouldn't even realise they were advertising PS3 unless you really look closely.

Come on Sony-Wake up+get some fun ads about!

Lately I've been seeing a whole lot more commercials for PS3 games. I've been seeing the Heavenly Sword commerical a lot lately. The Simpsons Game has been advertised lately. MLB The Show 2008 was very well advertised as well. I am sure that you will see a lot of Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted commericials during the rest of the year.

Now that they have done a pretty legitimate price drop on the PS3, I envision the sales to pick up a lot. The lineup for 2008 looks like dynamite. We'll see how everything goes.
