I would be pissed if every time someone logged on or went offline I heard a chime. It would drive me insane.

Speaking of messages, is there a way to stay online, yet disable just the messages which say "Bobby is now online" and whatnot.

I mean, it's a total mood killer. An example would be the cutscene before the final fight in MGS4.

"LIIIIIIIIQUIIIIIID!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"SNAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

LOL. Oh man, that's too true. Too true indeed...

And yes, you can turn off the notification messages. It's under System Settings, I believe. If it's not there, just look around, you'll find it.

ye i agree with you, its like on 360 you get a lil sound and when i ent lookin at the tv its nice to no you have a message without your friends thinking your ignorant, just like msn does.

In game XMB sports ticker or a weather ticker. It would be nice to catch the football scores without having to change the input source on my TV while im playing.
