Ok is it just me or is that with each new generation of gaming systems the games tend to get easier. Remember the game Battletoads double dragon the ultimate team... that game was sooooo hard. You can even go back further than that...the atari games...

Ok here is a good example. Metal Gear for the NES... and MGS4 for PS3... which one is harder?(impo sadly the NES)

I love games that have challenges and are hard to beat...like Ninja Gaiden... or Battletoads... or the first ninja turtles for NES(yes I am a 80's baby...lets go Turtles)

Anyway anybody else think this is a problem?

More and more people from the casual market are getting into video games and so more developers are trying to accomodate them.

Sitting down and playing Mario wasn't exactly seen as a skirt-dropper, if you know what I mean...

...well, it isn't exactly now, but you get the idea.

yeah, i have to agree the casual gamers started to play games and since they want the thrill not the difficulty, you get extremely easy games even on the hardest difficulty. I haven't been challenged dating all the way back to the atari, maybe nes (yes early-mid 80's as well).. i saw something about the hardest games in the history of video games, and the games on there were my favorites... i don't remember where i saw it but they said something like you couldn't beat contra without cheats, which brought a tear to my eye because i never cheated in that game and beat it probably a hundred times.

long live marble madness - that game would get you some action... well ... possibly, if they were intoxicated...

I feel exactly the same man... the only game this gen that gave me a challenge was valkyria chronicles and going through the boss xtreme in mgs4 (the hardest part was you have to pause, go to title screen, reload again from your last save/checkpoint). I wish games will go back to its roots that beating a game will give you a feeling that you REALLY accomplished something.

Maybe we're just getting better as gamers as the Gen's roll by. I remember playing a lot of Street Fighter 2 during my mis-spent youth (yep, another child of the 80's here too) and at the time, it was tough, but possible.... eventually.... if I could afford enough credits... then I bought the PS2 Anniversary Edition, and it all seemed ridiculously easy now. I did the same with Mortal Kombat 2. But I do agree that there's something to be said for the influx of the "casual gamer" into the market and not wanting to lost their trade. I dont have a huge problem with them toning down the "Normal" difficulty for these guys, if thats what they are doing, but if that is the case, then at least give us a "Difficult / Impossible" setting that really -is-, for the rest of us.

That's another thing^

You have to factor in your intelligence and experience as a gamer. Games may seem easier now, but that could be because of all the games you've been playing up until this point.

There are kids nowadays who think games are hard, and I'm sure some of them will look back a decade from now and wonder why games got so easy.

Kinda like how we're doing.

I think it's more like the older/more experienced the gamer, the easier the games.

i would love to play a game where you have to spend hours on one part and actually have to think about it... too many games try to be hard by the button sequences, and relies on a fast finger... but i know on my friend list, a lot of them think the are the best gamer out there, so if they can't beat it on the hardest difficulty they just bad mouth the game... so really i guess we can't play a game for difficulty, and just play it for other elements, those cinematic scenes that seem to take over what brings the "fun" factor to a game. Plus with online, multiplayer takes highest priority it seems, so that takes away from single player... it's all changing... as long as you have your old systems and games we should be fine if we want a good fun challenge (which i do lol time to bust out donkey kong country)...

If you are going to spend millions of dollars developing a game, it'd be pretty silly to waste the money on the later levels if none of your customers ever saw them ...

So it makes sense to make it possible for people to complete the games. You can always pick one of the harder difficulty levels if you want a challenge, or try to get the trophies.

Its not really a problem, developer care more about the causal market in general, the average gamer now adays doesn't have the patience to deal with a hard game in general, imo that's why games have different difficulty settings attach to them.

You don't have to look to far if you want to find a really hard current generation game. They still exist. I don't think games are necessarily getting any easier. I do think that the tools used to make games nowadays are more forgiving and allow the players to a little bit of error. For instance... in a lot of the older games, say you go to jump over a cliff or a gap in some game. You either make it or you don't. Lot's of games now days there's that sweet spot in between, and thus you land on the edge. Catch my drift?

My sisters can play PS3 games easily, but Sonic the Hedgehog from the Genesis days? Impossible. They wonder how I do it. Games, HAVE gotten easier. It's not just Sonic either. Neither of them can beat a single game from the past.

But surely you don't intend to represent all the old school games with Sonic.

Sonic is only one game.

Gamespot is pathetic for taking off an entire half of my post, but keeping one half. >.> Anyways, my sister(s) have beaten Heavenly Sword, Valkyrie Profile 2, Persona 3: FES, Soul Calibur IV, and Kingdom Hearts 2. And JRPG fans know that VP2 and Persona are not easy games by these day's standards.

Ahah.

5:45 in the morning.

Totally missed that other part, sorry about that.

And kudos to your sisters; mine isn't the gamer type.

With games there is a learning curve with getting used to the controls and understanding enemy IA. I find that if I go back to a game I though was hard that I am now much better at it. With new games the control has gotten much more fluid so that learn curve is reduced.

It's hard for me to say. I used to just buy games and never complete them just because I got bored with them or it just didn't interest me enough. I didn't really start caring about beating my games until I had to start paying with my own money. So, I didn't really start trying to beat my games until I got my first next gen console which was the 360 about 2 years ago. But, before that, I never really went into a game thinking "man I have to beat this". It was more like, "This game sounds really cool, so I wanna try it out." What im trying to say is, I wouldn't really be able to tell the difference of which games were harder from what era. To me, I would think that certain games are easier and some are harder..IMO.
