Have you ever wondered why firmware 2.40 has no in-game voice messaging, cross game invites, and an in-game-xmb feature for PS2 games / bluray discs.

Its all has to do with the size of the OS. I've said this before, and this went largely ignored, but read this if you are a real PS3 fan.

When the PS3 first launched, the OS took up 96 mb of ram. This was an absolute developmental nightmare. Why? When you take 256 (since PS3 ram is split into two) and subtract 96 mb of ram - you come up with 160 available.

Since than Sony has made some monumental achievements. Sony has been doing as much as they can to reduce the footprint of the OS WHILE adding features. This is no easy task.

So how much ram is used by the OS today? Rumored to be 40mb and most hints are pointing to 32mb of ram.

Since launch, if you guys haven't noticed, PS3 multiplatform games have looked considerably better, and first party titles have shined in a way they haven't before. Its all about of the RAM and the OS using it up.

(*In Sony's defense, to balance the memory usage, developer's were asked to use Cell. However, we all saw how that went when devs claimed it was too hard and decided to port over Fight Night, Orange Box, and countless other **** ports which literally took zero advantage of the Cell)

So when you guys request these features- Sony is busily working trying to reduce the size of the OS and add what you want. This is NOT easy.

What you can look forward to in the future is this:

I predict in the next large update they will remove many of the elements of the XMB that prove to be useless during IN-Game. There is no good reason Folding at Home, the Internet Browser, and User change settings are available in the XMB In game. I expect a more streamlined and gutted XMB. This will help remove clutter and fix lockups. _______________

im only 13 LOL

i knew that one :P well i didnt know how much ram the xmb used, but i knew the ps3 has 512 ram splitted into 2 for ram and video, i read an article that said that putting the whole xmb into a game would take a lot of effort and might not even be possible, well we saw that its possible but its a little slow i bet they are gonna remove those features that are useless while in game :D good thinking ;), im a programmer just starting though, and many people i know wouldnt have had that idea ;)

What I've always wondered is, is the 48mb used by the OS taken from the RSX video ram, or the Cell ram? If its from the video ram, then thats been the cause of all the multiplat trouble right there. If its using ram from the Cell, then it seems like that wouldn't be as big of a hit.

The XDR ram is used by Cell. Its used the same as the ram thats in your computer. It stores actively running programs in local memory.

The GDDR2 is used by the RSX. Its the same as the the kind thats on board a video card in your computer. Its used for storing textures and geometry information before its drawn onto the screen.

Sounds logical. I still don't inderstand why its bricking a lot of PS3s. You think it might have to do with people having a lot of demos, or movies? Or maybe themes? I have neither, but I do have a lot of music saved on my HDD. So far, 2.4 runs fine on my system even though its a little laggy when navigating the ingame xmb.

The virus was an sql exploit that made a window pop up on the Sony site giving a fake antivirus warning, nothing to do with the 2.40 update.

Seems like a legitimate reason to me, but you can't use folding at home or the Internet browser in game. So, I do not see how that would take up much memory.

Well what I heard around here, think it was on a forum but not completely sure was this: Basically, the majority of ps3s that have been bricked by 2.4 were running Auto Disc Start with a disc inside the console, or at least so it seems. By doing this, when the console is first restarted after downloading and installing the update, the auto disc start interfered with the first initiallation of the update, because the console is attempting to launch a disk while the update is trying to do its job, therefore causing a malfunction, and in the end bricking the system.
Or so I heard :)

Hope that helped.

Sounds plausable, like it was trying to boot from the BR drive because it was looking for a software update. Which would be the case if you had to boot the software update that comes with the new system thats the first thing it would do when you start it up for the first time. Olny in this case its a game disc so the system freaks out. Kind of like when you try and start up a PC with a USB drive plugged in. It tries to boot from the drive insead of the HDD.

The issue with Firmware Version 2.4 bricking PS3s is totally blown out of proportion. It has not bricked "a lot of PS3s" and has only affected a limited number of users. Try the GAF forum and you'll find only a few positive reports of 2.4 actually causing a system failure among pages and pages of users saying that their PS3 had no problem updating.

To be back on topic, this is some interesting information that I had not known before. But at times, it feels like Sony's trying to play cat and mouse with Microsoft a little too much rather than focusing on making the XMB unique, efficient, and immersive.

The current in-game XMB can definitely use a little cleaning up.
