Check this out.

(This is the 360 achievement list, but the PS3's trophies will be the same anyway)

I'm guessing most people won't really care, but I think this serves as a perfect example as why trophies should be single-player only. For those who don't want to check the link, the trophy is called "Dedication".

The description on how to get it: "Play online 6 months after your first time".

Uh, what? So I guess nobody will be able to get this trophy until September 22, if it really means that you have to play a match 6 months after you play your first online game. I know most people probably don't give a rat's *** about this, but I like trophy hunting and I just find online trophies extremely annoying. This is the first trophy I've seen of this type, however, so I thought I might point this out. In any case, this is just downright stupid.

Just because there are bad online trophies doesn't mean there can't be good, well thought out online trophies. Online is just as important or almost as important as SP so it should also have trophies too. If anything needs to go, it's collection trophies; collection trophies are some of the easiest, but by far most boring, pointless, and time-consuming trophies.

Play one match the first day, play one match any time form six months onward... it's not rocket science, it's a ridiculously easy trophy that's meant to strengthen the online community.

I don't know if that is the perfect example, but I see where you are coming from. The real reason online trophies/achievements should be scrapped is because when the servers shut down, or the community dies then what do you do? However, as you said I could care less. :P

True enough, glad I managed to get those LOTR: Conquest trophies before the servers shut down.

I know, but its just such a b***** thing for them to do.. Also, EA games drop in price so quickly that I usually try to trade them in within the first 2/3 months so i'm not getting 10 trade instead of 30 trade.. If I had like a guarantee the game was gonna stay at $60 for a year I'd be much less likely to trade it in.

Simple solution - Change the time settings on the PS3. Bet you it'll work.

Agreed TC, that is a pretty lame trophy. Some multiplayer trophies are fine, like accumulating a certian number of kills, etc. I haven ever been a fan of any of these "amount of time you have played the game trophies"

Personally I have always liked the trophy system as it adds replay to the game. I will always play through the game once without looking at any of the trophies and then after I beat the game I will go back and try to unlock all the trophies.

there is one simple solution to this... Play the game in 6 months. I know you want the trophies but lets say you get all of the trophies tomorrow, what are you going to do with them? There is nothing you can do once you have them, its not like once you collect them all you get some secret thing in the game all they just sit there on your profile. So if you were to get all of the trophies now or get them all in 6 months that doesnt change the fact that you are playing the game and enjoying it.

Does anyone remember the online trophies for Fight Night Round 4? Damn it that was a pain...there was a trophy for having the gold belt online or something, problem was, there was literally only ONE belt in the entire online community...just getting a shot at the title was a huge mission.

You can set it to manual I believe. Most of these time based ones I've seen on games can be done by simply changing the PS3 time so I'd be surprised if this game is any different.

Well considering the trophy involves you being online anyway and its just a comparison of integers, I'd be surprised if they don't check the time via internet and not based on your system settings.

You are preaching to the choir TC.Most online achievements/trophies are just a joke and get boosted anyway,as well as being near impossible on some games if you get them months after launch due to no-one playing them because they suck.At least Batman : Arkham City is online free...Best news ever.;)

Wouldn't it just be better to have a trophy for ranking up? Or for 10,000 kills? Those are at least legitimate trophies. This is just a tacky, cheap, garbage way of getting you to hold onto the game for 6 months.

I honestly don't mind the grinding trophies, to an extent anyway. Something that might take 50-100 hours of playtime online.. Of course this only applies as long as the game is going to be GOOD and will for sure have a community that will last several years at least. It's completely stupid when they have all these online trophies on a game that is a ghost town practically from day 1, and a game that was always destined to be a ghost town, usually because the servers are so bad you can't connect anyway.

Edit:My latest experiences of failed online trophies:

-Singularity: had to give up trophy hunt at 80% because literally NOBODY was playing one of the required game modes online, and it was hard to find a game at in the one game mode that people WERE playing. this was actually a pretty good game, but it was just dead online.

-Army of Two:40th day, gave up becausse online was so bad I would NEVER get it - even with the trophies being apparantly really easy. But honestly the whole game was bad, so I didnt want to bother with anymore single player either.

I think there should be online trophies. Just have a stipulation.

You should not have to get the online trophies in order to secure the Platinum.

However, you should be able to access even more trophies once you play online. As soon as you enter online, then the trophies should emerge.

I don't play online at all, but I want the Platinum for GTA IV which requires me to get online. I am not happy, but I knew that before I got the game. I guess I wont be the proud owner of Taking A Liberty trophy.

I think that would be a something we would all like, just make the online trophies optional and have nothing to do with percentage or the platinum, that way if you want you can still get rewarded for online stuff but the many people that don't play online wouldn't get screwed over.

Yeah I saw that last week. Here's my theory of why trophies should be only single player: 1. You want replayability right? Isn't the core point of having online multiplayer is to have a game to go back to? So the principle of being different every time should be enough reason to go back, or if you want gear/weapon unlocks. You shouldn't need a secondary reason to go back. 2. Single player is fun to play but it can basically be the same every time, therefore most people need a bit more reason to go back. Trophies are great for that. So basically online has replayability in its core and single player can lean on trophies and such for more replayability. Am I the only one that sees this?

All online trophies should be optional additions and not be part of the plat, your examle is one, the betters would be the online trophies of games where the servers are shut down, since then nobody has the chance to get those :S

There is a trophy for reaching the highest rank (assuming it's rank 50), I would much rather have a trophy like Dedication that pointlessly grinding.

Oh no doubt. If I'm done with this game after weeks, I'll not be holding onto to it just for one trophy, I'll just trade it in. But I have no doubt whatsoever that is what they are "going for" here with that trophy.

Well reaching rank 50 is actually doing something, and it means you played the game. It doesn't necessarily mean you had "skill", but it at least means you played the game online a significant amount. Hopefully it also means you enjoyed it on the way to rank 50, otherwise why would you bother at all??. They should have actually called that one dedication. What if I reach rank 50 in a couple of weeks though? I've unlocked everything else. All that's left is this totally superficial trophy that makes you "wait" for 6 months. That's why I don't like it.

So six months after the game comes out there'll be a momentary and minuscule increase in online usage as trophy hunters check in to get that one extremely stupid trophy. You've really got to wonder what these developers are thinking.

At least it's not as bad as all those "Play our game online for 150 hours, even though you'll be bored to death with it after 10 hours." trophies.

IMO Trophies need to be handled better overall. Collection trophies are fine if it's something you don't need to find 100's of. Or it's something that actually helps gameplay. If it's just a trophy it's useless. (eg. 50 feathers in AC2 for the hammer weapon to collect all weapons in the game. The last 50 do nothing for the game except a trophy.) I'm of the mind that it's fine playing through a game and they give you a trophy or achievment for completing a stage of the game. An extra trophy for doing it uniquely would be nice. Or if it is a gather trophy how about one for obscure objects. (eg. Fallout 3/NV collect 5 teddy bears, in your inventory. It's useless, but kind of fun.) Trophies, and achievments are really only there to show your dedication to the game. Just some games take it too far, with the collection trophies.

I'm with you TC, I hate multiplayer trophies with passion. I'm missing 2 online trophies in motorstorm PC to get my platinum, 1 in Battlefield BC 1, and half for Wolfenstein. What pisses me off the most about them is that some are just ridiculously hard to get if you don't have other friends who are also trying for the same trophy, like that kill 6 zombies in black ops zombie mode by shooting an explosive arrow on your partner. I made it, but **** it was a pain in the ass to get.

I think they should also get rid of the Bronze trophies. I think I remember I was awarded one for dying. And another for jumping 60 feet and dying. Just lame.

As someone who doesnt trade/sell games this is no big deal, get as many trophies as possible and get as much enjoyment out of the game then pop it in 6 months later. Simples!

15 or 20 wins online? That doesn't sound so bad. I remember looking into what was required for Fifa 11 I think you need to win like 100 games online. PLUS play 100 games with virtual pro in a game in virtual pro mode (and boost his stats to a certain level), PLUS win a game in EVERY stadium, win every league championship, win with a 1 star team vs 5 star team, etc. etc etc. It sounded crazy to me how much stuff you needed to do. That was one I quickly decided I would not go for trophies on since it would take 100's of hours. But for someone truly dedicated to playing Fifa, alot more of it would probably come naturally to them in time. They wouldn't mind the "grind". That's really the way it should be in theory. Platinum should be for dedicated players of a game. What throws the balance off is how many games only take 5 hours to platinum. Then you have others (Gran Turismo 5, that would take 1000+ hours plus a ton of skill to platinum).

Yeah that is a point about older games. I'm sure nobody is playing games like Far Cry 2 online these days. Or maybe I'm wrong.

There is a trophy for reaching the highest rank (assuming it's rank 50), I would much rather have a trophy like Dedication that pointlessly grinding.

I don't think it's the best designed trophy in the world either, but it's really not a big deal and is really easy to obtain.

With all hope, I think they mean not to quit on it the first time you play and play it and still be playing it 6 months later with pauses in between of course. Why else would it be called "dedication?"

I play Far Cry 2 a lot and there's still people to play but the community is shrinking, and fast.

Yeah I think multiplayer achievements are annoying too. I'm not saying they can't be creative, but if you're playing an older game, it can be more or less impossible to complete if the community isn't going strong. Not to mention, it's annoying when you're playing a competitive team-based game, and half your team is less occupied with winning the game and more involved with unlocking an achievement.
