Aside from being a pretty good blu-ray player, the PS3 is useless. I've long since finished Resistance and aside from the occasional blu-ray movie, I really don't use mine. But since the PS3 comes with a web browser, I figured I could at least use it to listen to my XM and Sirius radio subscriptions online while I'm playing my Xbox 360 or Wii.Â
Sony has always tauted the PS3 as a media machine so I figured it wouldn't be that much of a stretch for a "media machine" to stream internet radio. I can't even begin to say how wrong I was. The following is a short account of my experience trying to do something seemingly simple on the most powerful, nex-gen, system to date.Â
I knocked the dust off my PS3 and turned it on. I was immediately informed that I had to download some system update, how odd. By the time the system updated, installed, and restarted, I'd almost forgetton what I had originally set out to do. After about ten minutes of awkwardly navigating through the PS3's clunky interface, I finally got to the Sirius hompage and punched in my info. The Sirius player came up promptly thanks to my high-speed connection, not through anything the PS3 was doing.
I fired up my Wii and began playing Zelda trying to decide what Sirius channel I felt like listening to. When I had decided on the channel, 20 Octane, I switched over video inputs on my TV to the PS3 and clicked on the radio channel. The PS3 sputtered and coughed for a few moments before prompting me with some sort of plug in to install. I figured why not and accepted the plug in. A few seconds later the prompt went away. I thought the plug in had installed but wasn't really sure. I clicked on the channel again and, big suprise, got nothing.
I adjusted the volume on the radio player to the maximum and didn't hear anything. I adjusted the volume of my receiver to -20 and still didn't hear anything. At this point I already knew that it was the PS3 at fault but wanted to eliminate any human error on my part. I checked my home theater for any loose connections but they were all nice and snug. Everything else that was supposed to produce sound did. It was, of course, my PS3 failing to perform a simple task.
My experience at the XM website was similar. The XM player had a red triangle telling me it couldn't play music through the PS3Â though.Â
All I wanted to do was listen to internet radio while playing my other systems since the PS3's game library is joke. I was actually glad that I'd found a use for my PS3 aside from being a movie player. I wish that I was posting that I'd found something cool that the PS3 could do. I swear, if the PS3 wasn't a decent blu-ray player I'd sledge hammer that motherf**ker. What a failed abortion of a system!         Â
