360 = 512mb shared
PS3 = 256mb and 256mb (256mb for graphics and 256mb for everything else)
So...while it IS technically possible for 360 to have more RAM to have more expansive worlds etc,the graphics would have to take a pretty steep cut to notice any difference.
256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz
The 360 also has 512MB of RAM but it is not combined like this. People get confused and say the PS3 only has 256MB of RAM.
So don't worry the RAM on the PS3 is fine.
Since the cell is new technology it works in a different way. The PS3 has 512MB of combined RAM.256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz

Woo, im glad to see you cleared this one up right away :) im so sick of people bashing the ps3 because of the split ram. Ive heard the main issue with the ram is the xmb using like 96 megs of the total 512. I know their taking down the reserved ram though through updates so i dont know what it would be at now. I see so many threads on this though. Hopefully this can clear some of it up.
Ermm... how nice of you??Dante865
I just said that because you claim that you can upgrade the ps3 Ram by contacting sony, which isnt true.
I just dont like people that spread false information.

LOL...me too,I'm totally lost when topics like this come up!!!!!
Actually you can.. its not hard - If you can mod the Gamecube to be handheld, mod the psp to play ds games - this isnt hard at all.. dont try to act like you know, cus you dontDante865
Dude I know u can mod every consoles ever made. I m just pointing out that YOU CALIM THAT U CONTACTED SONY FOR A RAM UPGRADE, and Sony doesnt offer that service, that is why i called BS on your post. There are no Official ram upgrade made by Sony! So stop lying and telling people they dont know anything, if i ddint know any better i wouldnt have posted. enough said!
god you honestly dont kno anything  i went to sony centre.. my uncle works in one of there shops, he pointed it out so i chipped in - jus shut up ok?? i dont wanna waste my time on some who doesnt kno jackDante865
ur uncle ? plz give me a break, give a LINK of Sony stating that they provide that service then i ll beleive you, until then try to refrain to spread false information.
no actually give the phone number of that center so i can check for myslef, then if u are right i ll apologize to you...until then i think u are a liar.
LOL - Where do you expect me to get you a link from.. its a shop you damn idiottttDante865
give me the phone number

The big problems developers have with the ps3's ram is sony reserve 96mb for system use(xmb and what not).
360 only reserves 32mb of ram for system use.
So devs have that little bit extra to use on 360.
But i also heard sony plan on dropping this asap.
really ps3 has 256mb of video ram and 150mb of system memory to use for games, while 360 has 480mb for devs to use anyway they want.
Mines got a Gig, i wanna slowly save up n buy some more for it though, maybe i can go upto 4GB :O or maybe even 8GB!! -evil smurk- (btw just take it to sony centre and ask for a ram upgrade)
the PS3's default ram is 512, shared in 256mb
Dante865
You cannot upgrade ram within the ps3 only hdd memory.

Think about it, if you can replace the HDD, why not RAM..
Dante865
ok first where is this shop located? coz that s not a US phone number, so i know what the country code is.
Second hard drive upograde is written in the PS3 manual. BUT no where it is written in the manual that upon request SONY CORP will upgrade your ram.
I think a modder could do it but not SONY itself. This service is not available here in the US and i m pretty sure it s the same around the world. There are no OFFICIAL ram upgrade for the PS3. Which was my point all along.

Wow make up a story jack a nory.
This is not possible and its pointless, if you managed to upgrade your ps3's memory it wouldnt matter your games would not run better.
Devs lock how much system and memory ram there games use so if you had 16gb it would run excatly the same as the standard 512mb.
Basicly if your not lying you wasted your money, but im betting you come back and say my uncle give it to me. blah blah blah sorry but i smell bs.
Well im sorry you cant call it, UK :|Dante865
actually i can country code for UK is 44 . i ll giv eit a try now.

I can call it, whats your uncles name. i will ask for him personally. and that number looks fake as hell.
I will ring it when i get back.

rofl to the arguement why didn't they give it a gig to begin with? my crappy emachine has a gi of ram why not a GAMING CONSOLE ram is that expensive and it kick the crap out of xboxwazzup987
Yes ram is expensive itcost microsoft over 1 billion dollars toput 512mb into there system. 4gb of ram isnot really needed as you can see by gameslike mgs4 and killzone2, the ps3 only uses 96mb for its OS where as windows vista uses around 512mbof ram to run.
A pc with a 256mb video card and 256mb of ram along with a top of the range dual core could not run games as nice as a ps3 could.
dedicatedRAM is way, way better than shared RAM. so don't worry about it. and the RAM the ps3 uses is pretty damn good.bobbysbits
Is it, i dont think it is, ps3 has a set amount of ram it can use only 256mb for video and 15mb for the system(96mb is reserved for the xmb) where as devs can use the 360 unified ram anyway they want, so they could use say 200mb for video ram and 280mb(32mb is reserved for the dashboard) for the system or vice versa.
couldn't sony just send out a firmware update that allows the system use virtual memory from the HDD? even though virtual memory is slower than RAM it should still help.Zero5000X
It possibly already does that, just like 360 uses space from the hdd, if your 360 has a hard drive the system wil automacticly cache games so they load faster and play smoother i also think the ps3 already does this.
The best solution is to drop the reserved ram from 96mb to 48mb or even better 32mb, sony have laready talked about this and i think they plan on dropping that amount as soon as possible.

they can do this with just a firmware update right? but anyways wouldnt that just make the OS run crappy? i mean they obviously set it at what they did for a reason.

I think Sony may have already lowered the amount of reserve memory for the XMB via firmware updates. Most of the information we are seeing from the media is a few months old now. Just something to think about on the subject.

No not really, it was the interview with john carmack from id software where he was talking about this, i think its on gamespot.
Im assuming sony reserved that amount for other things maybe home, but im sure carmack or some other interview said sony planned on dropping this amount.
The thing is 360 only uses 32mb of ram but the 360 can bring up the dashboard in game which must be the most taxing thing for system memory running the game and the dashboard together, but they can do that with only 32mb of ram.
So id like to think sony could drop this amount, im thinking its reserved for things like kome and also running video clips in the xmb that will take up some memory and really id rather they give the extra memory to devs then allow us to run 15 secs clips of the videos in the xmb.
Im really not sure whats going on, this is just what ive heard from developer interviews, basicly the dedicated memory is not the probelm the problem is the extra memory sony reserve for xmb and what not, this could be the reason why certain ps3 games have frame rate problems, but i also believe good devlopers who try to get the most out of ps3 can use the hdd and the cell to correct some of these probelms.
Sony really should have never created brand new tools, they could have improved the old tool set developers where familar with with alos making a new set of tools and then devs could use both untill they could work better with the new set.
But sony did thesame thing when ps2 came out brought out new tools that were unfinished and the developers had to struggle for around a year but once they got used to them you sen the great games they managed to make on ps2, i think the same thing will happen this time once sony get the final versions of there new toolset out to devs(i think they may have already) and devs get familar with them we will start to see more awesome games on ps3.
Theres really not that much to worry about, let the devs and sony worry about this while we enjoy there system. it will all work out in the end.

Im refering to information i read in the john carmack interview which was just last week and there has not been any firmware upgrades since then so i think it has not happened yet, although i could be wrong.

Sorry i ment yes they could do this with a firmware upgrade and no i dont think it would make the os run bad.
heres a noob statement for you all:
why can't the ps3 use it's hard drive for memory instead, that'll make it three times faster than the 360.
Also it could be possible sony have big plans for the reserved ram, basicly home will have been in development before ps3 launched, so im thinking its reserved for that.
And i also think home will use most of the video memory, as the avatars and world are all quite highly detailed 3d models, plus theres games to be played, logging straight into online games and plenty other stuff we dont know about and things they have coming in the future.
I have faith in sony they have some smart guys working for them, i just think its taking longer than they planned as basicly they had to clean up after Krazy Ken. just my opinion kutaragi fans, i know he did great think but he did get a bit arrogant and and crazy in his final days.

PSdual_wielder
No it wouldnt, hdd is just virtual ram, and also the ps3 already uses the hdd just like the 360 does, you can cache certain parts of games to the hdd to make them load faster and run smoother, just like the 360 automaticly cache the last 3-5 games you played and then they will run faster and smoother.
Really its not that big of a deal sony and the devs will figure it out one day, but i believe neither console will ever be 3 times as fast as the other, they both do certain things better and worse than the other console, they are very even in terms of power.
