i have a seagate 160gb ex HDD

it already says that its formatted in FAT 32, so why wont the PS3 read it?!?!?!

heres how my folders are:

PS3/Music

PS3/Photo

PS3/Video

i also tried just putting Music, Photo, and Video

thanks!

I think you have to make all the folders, and its directories in CAPITAL letters. for example, PS3/MUSIC.

If it comes straight out of box, chances are for drive that size it's preformatted in NTFS. I'd link up w/ windows and verify it first w/ disk manager. The above 2 thread will get you some guild to work through if you still have problem

btw PS3 doesn't need file in particular order. U can always use triangel to search all.

So you don't see anything like USB DEVICE show up as an option in any of the media tabs? Is it a USB powered device? The ps3 may not put out enoughjuice to run that drive off usb power alone. I've never tried one of those with my ps3, so I don't know.

I've had no issue with my PS3 powering my USB external drives. So power is not an issue. I've played plenty of DivX (etc) videos off USB drives/flash drives without issue. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Have you tried other ports? Or used other usb devices on those ports? Can you feel the drive spin up or light up? Since its not showing up at all, it sounds like either a power issue, or a ps3 usb port issue.

haha, yes i tried it in every USB port. the HDD gets its power from a wall socket, so the power cant be the issue.

USB DEVICE does not pop up on the xmb like my flash drive does. i dont know what to do. should i re-format it in FAT 32 using swiss knife even if its already in FAT 32? this is probably going to be the most mysterious problem ill ever have with the PS3....

for some reason this thread smells fishy... be that ur attitude and thread title " The ULTIMATE PS3 question no can answer."

About the only thing I can think of is that ur IDE to USB converter is too old (1.1 usb spec) or that trying to shrinking ur partition would work. I'd say do a quick format but if you r sure disk is already fat32 then that's a bit pointless (I generally do my own formatting regardless of what original hd comes w/ so maybe giving it a shot will help).

how do you unify the partitions? theres only one big FAT 32 partition and 16MB of free space. thats all i can see in the windows disk management. so after i unify it, just reformat it and it should work? woowww, if this works it'll make my day. thanks

After reading this thread, I never knew you can even plug an external into the PS3.

So, using my Seagate 160gb external hdd, I experimented for a bit.. and success!

I created four folders at the top of my external hard drive or the root of my hard drive without doing those partitions and what not.

F:\PHOTO\

F:\MUSIC\

F:\VIDEO\

F:\GAME\

then I tossed in some random files. like

F:\VIDEO\bleach.avi

and it works! I'm guessing you have the same external as me! :)

I am having the same problem.

I have a 300Gb External HDD, and also a 4Gb USB stick.

Both of these worked fine for transferring pictures, videos, music and save files.

Now, for the passed month or so - the PS3 isn't reading them correctly - on both devices it will pick up SOME of the files, but not all of them, and then it may just wig out and not even load anything.

Anyone know what is going on? as it is really starting to hack me off!

Peace out!

Yes I have the same problem with my HDD, when too many files are in the same folders (30 or so video files) I get a broken file tag or the video plays and stop 15sec later on some files. I think it's a problem with the actual firmware and will evantually get fixed but I could be wrong

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't FAT32 support up to 32GB? Not sure, but just throwing that out there.
