Hello fellow PS3 owners. I'm not much one for the games on the PS3 yet (Nothing it has exclusive I want to play that badly) but I'm big into Home Theater (I play Halo 3 online on a 106 inch screen w/ 7.1 surround...it's a beautiful thing) and I have heard that the PS3 is a wonderful Blue Ray player. And it's silent (yes, the 360 is like a chainsaw)!!! So I was wondering, I've heard the PS3 is HDMI 1.3 capable, but is there a way to get the lossless audio (Dolby True HD and DTS HD) from it to my reciever (I have Onkyos new reciever that decodes those new formats via HDMI). Also, my reciever has a 7.1 channel input if there isa way to utilize that for the lossless sound through the PS3 as well. Ohh!!! And does the new 40 Gig have enough USB ports (I heard it has 2 less than the 80) and does it have wifi? Thanks for your feedback, and I'll look forward to commenting in this forum again.

the 40gb does have wifi, and it does have 2 fewer USB ports than the 60 and 80gb. As for your audio system, just buy an HDMI cable claiming to be HDMI 1.3 compliant. Monster is probably the best bet if you want gaurenteed compatibility but I bought a $2 one off of Ebay that supposedly has it as well...

This is indeed correct, I did dished out few extra dollars (not really needed) for a monster cable with 1.3 Audio output. Is it really getting it? I can't tell you really.

I'm satisfied the way surround sound is.

One HDMI (quality) cable should take care of video and audio.

The 40GB does have wi-fi. Honestly, you only really need two USB ports. I have the 60Gb with 4 ports and I've only ever used two at the sametime (one to charge a controller and one for a USB hub for a keyboard/mouse). Hope this helps

Yep the 40gb still has wifi. 2 less usb ports really isn't a problem bc you can get a cheap usb hub $5 at newegg.com, can just unplug things you don't use, and I have only ever used two at a time (one for charging controller, the other for charging the bluetooth headset). As for BC, I thought that it would be huge for me since I have 60+ ps2 games so I got the 60gb in march b/c I heard that they were getting rid of BC or using software thinking I would play ps2 games, and honestly I really have never gone back, I just can't make myself do it after playing ps3 games even though they aren't a lot of them.

HDMI 1.3 handles 7.1 surround. If you need a seperate audio output, cause you are running the hdmi into your projector, then the ps3 has a an optical out for audio as well. I've never messed with it, so I'm not sure how high quality the optical audio cables support. Anyway, the 40gb still has wifi. Only things missing from it are card readers, ps2 BC and 2 usb ports. Honestly, I never use any of the usb ports on my 60gb. I have a ps1/ps2 memory card reader plugged into one, but i only used it once to copy all my ps2 saves to my ps3's virtual memory card. I got one of those wall charger things with 2 usb ports in it to charge my controllers/ipod/bluetooth headset/etc. Anything that you would need to hook into a usb port on the ps3 (keyboard, mouse, headset, controller, etc) you can get in bluetooth, so you only need the ports for charging, which you can do on your computer, or a wall charger like me, or the ps3. And the hard drive is cheap and easy to upgrade. So basically, the only thing you miss out on with the 40gb is ps2 BC. (which in theory could be implemented at a later point if they take the time to optimize pure software emulation.)

Okay some of you guys in this topic are just ...I don't even want to say. 106" screen is capable from a HD front projection. Sony sells them and many others. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Projectors/sem/rpsm/catOid/-17062/N/20012866+20012867+20017062+5175/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do

Also yes the PS3 has an optical out but that is not the best audio out the PS3 can do. HDMI is the best audio out, it does both video and audio and yes its 1.3. This is what I found out at the Playstation website...

"A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. is required to output 7.1 Ch. audio from the HDMI OUT connector."
"This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1Ch audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel."
http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps3/gettingstarted/default.html

It does support Dolby HD though I believe but here is the online manual for the Playstation 3 if you have any other questions.

The PCM output is the best lossless sound output possible out there. I'm sure if you have the new receiver, it will take it and produce the best sound on your 7.1 audio system.

I myself uses a 5.1 (too poor to buy the other two speakers), but I can assure you the PCM sound from HDMI beats the optical output by miles.

See i used optic straight to the Reciver (5.1) from both the PS3 and a seperate one for the cable box. I figured thats better than HDMI to the TV then Coax from the TV to the Receiver. HDMI isn't all that great, you can find plenty of atricles on why proffesionals perfer Component still.

I have 7.1 surround on my PS3. Connected with optical cable and a 1080p LCD 42" tv. Awesome sound and picture, both with games and blue ray.
