Hey there,

I am thinking about picking up a PSP today, but I am torn between a PSP go and a normal PSP system. I like the portability of the Go and the fact that it is tiny and I could carry it pretty much anywhere and being able to carry my entire library of games everywhere, but I hear mixed reviews about that system compared to the 3000 series. What are some of the major pros, and cons of each type of PSP system, and what would you recommend would be the best investment for the long run? Thanks!

I'd get the PSP 3000 if I were you. The GO is awful. You can't play any UMDs on it, small screen, only has 16GB of internal memory, expensive, and you have to go online to buy games for it. The 3000 you can replace your memory sticks, bigger screen, cheaper, can play UMDs, can buy games off PSN for it, and it has a built in mic for skype chat.

Get the 3000, Sony made a huge mistake in releasing the GO.

Isn't there a slot in the Go for a memory card? Also do you think it would make more sense to hold out a year for the NGP?

Yeah you can put M2 Micro SD cards in the PSP GO but those brands are much more expensive than the traditional Magic MS for the PSP 3000. And if you want a PSP right now you should get it. The NGP won't be here for awhile, and you can get a 3000 for pretty cheap now. If you think it's worth the wait then sure, you'd probably want to wait until E3 so Sony can give out more information though.

I prefer the Go for these reasons...

1. UMD's are on their way out. If you're planning to upgrade to the NGP, any UMD's you buy will not transfer over.

2. On the contrary, anything you download to the PSP Go will transfer over, including PS1 classics, minis, and PSP games.

3. The Go is more portable, has a longer battery life, is quieter, has a brighter (albeit smaller) screen, a better D-pad, and you don't have to carry UMD's around anymore.

4. The Go has bluetooth, so if you wanted, you could play games with a Dualshock 3.

I'd break it down this way. If you're planning on getting the NGP on launch day or shortly after, I would buy the Go now to tide you over. If you aren't planning on getting the NGP within the first year, I would get a PSP-3000. Just realize that unless you are planning on using both systems, trade in values of the PSP 3000 and UMD's themselves will completely tank.

I never thought about the transfer part of the equasion. That is a good point. Does the smaller screen cause a problem for you with most games?

Not in the games I've played. It's really not *THAT* much smaller. People just like to be picky about it.

Maybe I'll look into both if the store has them in stock. I like the sound of the Go, but the price is kinda a big thing for me. I mean I am going to Trade in a DSi XL in hopes of bringing it down some, but we will have to see.

The UMDs might be a clunky to carry around, but physical UMD games can frequently be bought much more cheaply than their digital versions (Amazon.com frequently has some good deals on PSP UMD games). However, I don't think you'll be able to use UMDs with the NGP.

I suspect there *might* be a price drop coming on the PSP Go very soon. Today is the day that the three free game vouchers (Little Big Planet, Socom, and Ratchet and Clank) expire. When those go away, I can see the price of the PSP dropping to $169 or maybe as low as $149.

If you want those free games though, you'd better run out and get yourself a PSP Go today and activate it in time!!

The PSP 3000 is cheaper, has just about all the functionality that the Go has (minus bluetooth support). Can play the exact same games from PSN. Has a removable battery, a UMD drive, and you can buy duo 2 sticks that hold as much as the internal memory that's in the GO. Only sucky thing about the 3000 is it's awkward shape to where it always causes my fingers to crap up and joints to hurt. Also, I have a tendency of always accidentally turning it off, because of where the power switch is located at. Sometimes, I even end up hard resetting the thing, by accident. (I don't own a 3000, though... mines a 2000; don't really know if the power button is the same, but I'm assuming that it is)

When I did it, I signed into my PSN account on the PSP Go, and they sent me the vouchers in an e-mail a few days later. I'm guessing if you can show Sony your receipt saying that you bought the PSP Go on 3/31, they'd give you the vouchers. If they don't, that kind of sucks. Hopefully it works out though.

You should get a regular psp. You can't play all the games on psp Go since not all companies released the games digitally. Plus, you can get some good deals on UMD games from gamestop when they have their used game sales.

FFVII Crisis Core, Mega Man Powered Up, and the Star Ocean remakes are among the games I've noticed are unavailable. This being said, I'm quite happy with my PSP Go, and have found plenty of games that have been quite good. My only real complaint with the system is that the L/R buttons are awkward to use. Based on the layout of the PSP 3000 this problem is probably less significant for it.

In the end, it all depends on what you're going to use your PSP for and what you care about for gaming systems.

PSP GO, you can't put UMDs in it. Which may not be a problem for you, since you likely don't already have any physical PSP games. But for people who do have UMDs and old PSP games, well, why should we have to pay more money for a game we already have? Additionally, physical games can actually be bargained for, maybe even wait it out for a while and find it for $5 in a Hastings bargain bin; downloadable games, the prices are set and will only decrease when Sony wants them to decrease. And while PSP games are small (1.17 GB) and the PSP GO has 16 GB, you need to factor in how many games do you want? And don't forget to save some room for your game saves.

I got a PSP Go and i lvoe it i would hate to carry around the monster PSP 3000. The PSP Go is amazing IMO and i would reccomend it.

Wolfetan

The 3000 is a monster? Looks like someone never had a PSP 1000.

That's like playing a PC game in Window mode, just to make the graphics "crisper" and the framerate higher.

yeah u cant get used games from psn theres alot of great games out plus u can loan them to friends and get them into it. plus you can hook up your psp 3000 to a tv and watch movies in 480p with the component cables. i am not a playstation fan but i fell in love with my psp 3000 also being 6'3" the go is more crapmy and uncomfortable

I did, but I was able to get a Go for free (I did the unthinkable and traded some games to gamestop...GASP!), so I got that and the ltitle big planet code for the free game downloads still worked. So I couldn't pass that up. And it does go to the 7th.

The portability and the digital downloads are what sold me on the Go, and I love it. Fits easily in my pocket. No needing to swap umds, and the pause feature is incredibly useful. I'd say go with the Go.

The Go feels very awkward, with the placement of the analog, as well as both hands pretty close together when gaming. The 1000/2000/3000 feel more like controllers.

I had the PSP go and I have the 3000, I loved the Go at first with the 16 gb of memory. That was before my 160 gb iPod, I would use that as my "media hub". The only bad thing was although I had my PS 1 games with me, NO UMD'S!!!!!! So, I gave my Go to my girlfriend. It was too small for my hands, plus I wanted UMD's. So if you want a "media center" get a go, becasue you can transfer you stuff to your NGP later. But if you want a system with cheap games get the 3000, you can get cheap games for like $15 at gamestop.

I would go with the PSP 3000. I love my PSP and sure it's a bit noisy but I personally believe that the Go is really uncomfortable to hold. I also think that it's a nuisance that you have to download all of your games onto the Go, while, on the other hand, the PSP 3000 can play UMDs AND download games from the playstation network.

Yeah, UMDs seem to be cheaper than buying them on the PSN network. If you REALLY can't wait until October-November for the NGP, get the 3000. 3000 pros: cheaper games, physical media AND downloadable media , cheaper expandable memory, more conveniently located analog pad, overall cheaper price cons: bigger, bad battery life, no built in memory Go pros: smaller, built in memory, better battery life cons: more expensive games, only downloadable media, more expensive expandable memory, overall higher price Personally I would get the 3000, but if you plan on getting the NGP and cost is no hinderance, get the PSP Go.

Thats the main thing. The PSP has been around for long enough that all the games are under $30. You can always find something good.

PSP 3000 only seems bigger now because of the PSPgo smaller size. The 2000/3000 is the perfect size to me compared to 1000/Go

I think it's interesting how many people think the Go is uncomfortable. I have larger than average hands, and it fits me perfectly. Everyone is different...

I just don't like how the analog pad is so far off to the side. I haven't been able to try the PSP Go so does anyone else think the analog pad is too far to the right?

Both are better than the 1000 and downloadable games last way longer than the UMD copies.

Imagine being able to get a new game the second it comes out without leaving your bedroom? If Sony would lower the average price to 25 bucks for a new game. They would have the online thing onlock!! Say PSN was to release a new AAA game 12 ET...and you didnt have to go toa store to get it.

That's pure lazyness dude >.> and if the game is 1 GB and up, you'll have to wait like an hour to play it.

I have the GO and 3000 and haven't touched my 3000 since getting the Go. So much more portable and my downloaded games will stay on PSN and be available for the NGP. Get the GO.
