I'm thinking about buying a PS3, but I have some questions :

1. My friend spoke of a recent firmware update that caused his PS3 (non-slim) to An Hero and become unplayable, requiring him to purchase a new one. Does this happen to all non-slim PS3 consoles? Will a Gamestop refurbished (don't have a lot of cash ATM :() standard PS3 still work or should I purchase a PS3 slim?

2. In the event a normal, refurbished PS3 will work, is there any point of getting a 60/80/120 GB hard drive over a 40 GB hard drive?

3. Is there any point in having a 4 USB PS3 over a 2 USB PS3?

4. Will the better Blu-ray player and/or PS3 graphics (compared to standard DVD and XBOX 360 graphics, respectively) be noticeable on a standard definition TV? Again, I don't have a lot of cash.

5. Do many people still play Killzone 2?

6. Is there anything else I should know about the PS3?

I don't know what your friend is talking about. Based on my experience I wouldn't recommend a refurbished though, if you can afford a new one, do it.

2. In the event a normal, refurbished PS3 will work, is there any point of getting a 60/80/120 GB hard drive over a 40 GB hard drive?

60's are the most likely to die from YLOD (but are PS2 backwards compatible) and 40's are a bit more likely to have blu-ray lens failures (though I don't know how prevalent it really is), but as far as size goes, it doesn't really matter because you can easily upgrade the hdd. With the 40GB you'll probably need to eventually.

3. Is there any point in having a 4 USB PS3 over a 2 USB PS3?

Not really. Convenience I guess if you want to recharge more than 2 controllers at a time.

4. Will the better Blu-ray player and/or PS3 graphics (compared to standard DVD and XBOX 360 graphics, respectively) be noticeable on a standard definition TV? Again, I don't have a lot of cash.

Blu-ray will look like DVD on an SDTV. XBOX 360 and PS3 are both HD consoles, the PS3 will look comparable to how the 360 looks on an SDTV.

5. Do many people still play Killzone 2?

People still play, but there aren't nearly as many people as more popular online games like MW2 or BFBC2.

6. Is there anything else I should know about the PS3?

It's good.

  1. There have been firmware updates in the past that have made the PS3 act a little funny but nothing too serious. In other words that is not really an issue. Yeah a refurbished one should work, just make sure the condition they give it to you in is good and get a warrenty.
  2. Well I do not suggest getting a 60 gig since all of those seem to be breaking down now. Original 80 gigs have 4 USB slots and limited PS2 Backwards compatibilty
  3. I've played my PS3 on a SD TV and it looks just fine, you can still play and enjoy your PS3 without HD.
  4. Yes, there are quite a lot of people who still play KZ2.
  5. If you want to know anything else check out this PS3 faq

1. Slim is quite and heats up less. i have it in a stand under LCD and even slim makes it hot there. on older fat 60gbs you can install windows or other OS. Definitely take more then 40/60 HDD - i downloaded many demos and it filled up pretty quick (i have 120GBs slim) For charging many controllers get a separate charger stand - it's much easier then doing it with cables and can get it cheap on eBay. Buy refurbished - make sure it's got warranty. And if buying on eBay make sure seller has good rating.

A 60GB would be nice can play PS2 but more chance of YLOD. HDD space dont matter you can pick one up and replace it for a bigger one.

Im using a 80GB PS3 swap with a 500GB seagate and its runing very strong still i play alot on it now a days.

Firmware updates do not make systems unplayable. Any standard PS3 will be fine, but I do not recommend a refurbished system, you will spend more money on the issues it might cause compared to if you just got a new PS3.

2. In the event a normal, refurbished PS3 will work, is there any point of getting a 60/80/120 GB hard drive over a 40 GB hard drive?

Some of the old PS3 60 and 80 GB ones can play PS2 games, however they will cost more than buy a slim brand new. Because the ability to play PS2 games drives up the price. However, Sony removed that feature because it wasn't needed.

3. Is there any point in having a 4 USB PS3 over a 2 USB PS3?

None that I can think of. I have a slim and a 60 GB launch system and they both work fine, I never needed more than 2 USB ports.

4. Will the better Blu-ray player and/or PS3 graphics (compared to standard DVD and XBOX 360 graphics, respectively) be noticeable on a standard definition TV? Again, I don't have a lot of cash.

Not as much, to enjoy High Definition graphics and movies you need a HDTV and this is not required. You dont need a HDTV for the PS3. However, games will look better.

5. Do many people still play Killzone 2?

I'm not sure, I think a majority of the community is on Modern Warfare 2.

6. Is there anything else I should know about the PS3?

The slim is very sexy looking in person.
