Hey there,
I've been thinking of getting a PSP and both GTA games with it (no, I'll get more than that later on). However, here's the problem. I'm 16, and EB (as well as any other store near me) has policies against selling M-rated games to minors.

My parents are totally against getting the games since they saw a story on the news about GTA and how violence. I guess you don't really forget Tommy Vercetti beating a woman with a baseball bat when it's on national TV. I've got a friend that plays the games, and my parents think his parents are insane for letting him play them.

Well, long story short, how am I supposed to get one of these things with the games I want? Legally, at least. I can't use an online retailer (no credit card), and I've got no friends I can buy it off of.

What should I do?

Explain to your parents that most of the bad stuff they show on TV is optional, and that you wouldn't do that if you got the game.

I have before. I mean, I've praised all the non-violent things about it. Since I'm a big Vice City fan from when I played it, I talked about the soundtrack, atmosphere, EVERYTHING about the game besides the violence, to no avail.

Plus, my mother isn't crazy about video games (my brain is rotting from them, apparently, even though I maintain an A in an advanced school).

I've no idea what to do. I was thinking about getting a friend with an eBay account to order one for me (found a nice deal, $90 for PSP and Vice City Stories, no bids) and I'd pay him back... but I think they'd notice if I got a new system all of a sudden. Plus, if they found out I got the game without their consent, they'd be furious. My friend lent me the PC version of Vice City, and I played that for a while, but never let my parents find out about it. A file, however, is much easier to hide than an actual product.

Plus, I'm not so sure I want to be dishonest about it, either...

Hmm... during the holidays, I was given this card by a family member. It's like a credit card, but it has a certain amount of money on it. I guess it's similar to a debit card.

Well, I might be able to get a copy of Vice City Stories with it from some online retailer ($25 should be enough to cover it) and get the PSP at my local EB (I can just bike down there). Still, I've no idea when the package will ship, and if it ships when my parents are home, and they see the thing... ugh.

Granted, I'm usually at home at least two to three hours before my parents are but still...

...anyone think I should try this?

you could try that.. but it would be dishonest, i dunno if your alright with that. i bought games from circuitcity.com and had them shipped to my house and i didnt have to put in an ID or anything to make sure i was 18. however the games i got werent rated M. you could try that. good luck with whatever option you choose. whenever you do get your psp enjoy it! its a great console!!

Wow, I admit i'm impressed by your parents. Most parents wouldn't care if their children (who happen to be hoodied thugs stealing pocket money on the streets) whore M rated games. But yet again you seem like a responsible character so I can understand your frustration. I have an idea though: If you want to order the game in the most subtle and safest way possible, I recommend you order it from an online retailer BUT have it sent to a trusted friend's house who can then pass it on to you later. Since you're responsible you will end up enjoying the game for what it is and your parents will never know, everyones happy.

I thought about that, but then I wondered what would happen if their parents noticed a package with my name on it, called my parents, and I'd be forced to explain what was inside.

Hmm. What to do, what to do...

I just get my grandma to go to the store with me and buy M games for me. She has no idea what ESRB ratings are. Some stores don't even care if you're underage and you can just walk right in and get an M rated game. It's not like you'll get in trouble if the cashier realizes you arent old enough to buy the game. Just say "Oh, I didn't know about that" and walk away.

I suggest buying video games from someone who doesnt know what ESRB ratings are.

Instead of going to Walmart or EB/Gamestop, go to best buy or futureshop.

No, no, that's not what I mean. I mean, stores have policies that prevent them from selling them to "minors". Plus, if they're caught, they get a hefty fine, and may get fired.

i would say ebay is your best bet but I think that you need a bank account to do that.  Just as some random teenage if hes over 17 to buy the game for you.  Thats who I got into rated R movies.

Uhh, bump?

I still need ideas... the closest store I can bike to is EB, although Wal-Mart is somewhat close. That's about all the stores around me that I can pick up video games from. And they both have policies against selling the games to minors.
