Hello! This my first thread over here at the PS3 forum.

I currently only own a Wii of the three current-gen systems, and now I want a PS3 too. Last-gen I owned a GameCube and a PS2 so this feels like a natural upgrade. The problem is though that I don't have a HDTV, and I don't want to spend too much money just to be able to play a few PS3 games.

My question is; do I really NEED a HDTV to play PS3 games? Is the picture awful on a normal 28 inch SDTV?

Thank you! :)

No, not at all. I play on an SDTV and I'm still amazed by the graphics.

Great graphics are great graphics regardless of the TV. HDTV does make those graphics substantially nicer, but an SDTV is still more than good enough.

Don't worry, you'll still have a great time.

TC, do you have a HD computer monitor by any chance? You could use as an HD source if you have one.

"only" having an SDTV shouldnt be in they way of purchasing a ps3 the graphics are great regardless, and it leaves room to be wowed some more if you ever upgrade to HD.

it's completely fine. plus the ps3 comes with that PS2 yel, red, white cable (it's name leaves me) that's compatible with sdtv's. I do think this gen should be viewed on an hdtv for the eye-candy effect, but it's not necessary and you shouldn't feel pressured into upgrading to HD. It is very nice though :)

however to take full advantage of high deaf you gotta go to the eye doctor and get prescription glasses. i myself being rich and having a $6500 60in plasma tv, went the extra mile and got lazor eye surgury so i could see below 20/20 and fully enjoy each and every pixel on my tv resulting in a 3d experience of a multidementional lifetime

There's something annoying about SDTV. It's not friendly with texts. :( I can't the small texts in MGS4, even with my 28'' CRT TV. Which make me stop playing MGS4 for now.

You can play on an SDTV and it will look good. unfortunately you are getting screwed by buying Blu-ray and not being able to use it.

HD is amazing for the PS3 However When I first purchased my PS3, I was playing it on a 15" SDTV. The lowest of low for a PS3 to be connected to However I popped in Resistance 1 and I just grinned, The first opening scene of Resistance is maybe not the most epic, but it was the first of many smiles to be brought to my face as the PS3 showed off all its SD power on somthing so punnie as a 15" So my advise, even if your not even THINKING of getting a HDTV yet, a PS3 on a SD screen still blows the last generation away I hope this helps

No, you don't need an HDTV at all. If you're fine with the picture you have now with everything else, PS3 games wouldn't be any different.

I dont have a HDTV and the games still look great, you dont have to have an HDTV. My goal is to have a 42+ inch 1080p 120Hz HDTV by the time the next gen systems come out.

Get a HDTV when you could afford to. But games still look great in SD.

There's an option to make the text thingies on the side much larger in the menu. I was considerably surprised when I discovered this feature, and found it works wonders on smaller TVs.

I remember when my cousins got a PS3, they had an SDTV at the time, yet when we saw the graphics on motorstorm we were like 'WOAH!!!!". Fast forward a few months and they get a huge 46" HDTV. So I went over to there house to them play on it and we were all like "WOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

The point is, it looks amazing even on SDTV, but once you get in on HDTV you won't wanna go back.

I played on an SDTV when I first got my PS3. It still looked excellent aside from the tiny text. So, i suggest you go for th PS3, and update your TV later.
