I don't see what's wrong here. The Copyright Office has already declared that jailbreaking is legal, and jailbreaking the iPad opens up a lot of features that Apple left out. Stop making a big deal out of nothing.

^ *Claps* As a hater of apple products and a fan of homebrew projects since I had consoles and hand helds running stuff they shouldn't of been (well we all get curious dont we?) I applaud this effort, freedom XD Only bad thing about the ps3 getting cracked was more online games being abused but that's part of what happens when you free something that has the potential for such a thing, I see only good for those foolish enough to have an ipad2 (make sme kinda want one XD)

Geohot purchases a PS3 with his own hard earned money and comes up with a method such that PS3 users can use the hardware they purchased. And you want him to rot in a cell? Really?

Screwing around with hardware should never have done anything like this. Sony's network security should have accounted for this like every other company does. If I purchase a piece of hardware, I am entitled to open it up and run as many electrons through any wires I choose. This is all it boils down to.

Umm, no he didn't. He hasn't had anything to do with the PS3 after the court case. The credit card ordeal is something entirely separate from the Geohotz & Anonymous situation.

I want him to pay for this? yes of course but jail? lol no that's no good,he should be made to do community service for about 3 years. Are you happy that he got a slap on the wrist from sony and the fbi and got no jail or fine or anything? if that's the case then i need not answer your question as you obviously have all the right answers already. I do not condone malicious hackers who even with no intent to disrupt others,do not give a flying f...... about repercussions simple as that pal that's all. if your a wannabe hacker ou would stick up for this George guy but if your old skool you would think he is a cheeky little sod that has no scruples and likes to look like king hack....i can tell you for nothing that hackers never used to be this lackluster, they had some pride in the work for the people not themselves like GEORGE. if you do put him in a cell lets put him in a f...... Scriptkiddies are defined as individuals who run tools developed by others. I'm going to go out on a limb and dismiss you as an expert in the field as you are yet to submit anything even relevant to discussion. Also, I don't see how letting players put linux on their PS3's can be deemed by anyone as malicious. Your baseless posts seem to be convincing others that geohot had anything to do with the PSN debacle. He clearly doesn't and if Sony put in the same effort in protecting our information as they did bringing their users to court and saddling them with DRM, PSN would never have gone down in the first place.

I think it would be far more constructive if you could tell us why he shouldn't be allowed to. Clearly he is allowed to, since he exists within society and there's news articles declaring his intent. So, why oh why and under what law should he be jailed?

No, the Copyright Office has ruled it to be fair use under the DMCA. What he's doing is perfectly legal, and there's nothing wrong with it.

The vast majority of copyright law stands in opposition to first ammendment rights, although copyright law actually is in the constitution itself. All court cases in which first ammendment rights have been ruled against were explicitly justified by the malicious and unneccessary nature of the speech (such as yelling fire in a movie theatre). Since Geohotz specifically describes his work as "Running homebrew and exploring security on your devices," I can't picture any judge taking that as maliscious.

Jeez. First: Rebug, which is what you were referring to, was developed by Cyberskunk, not Geohot. Second: this was an attempt to simply let you use features already available on your console which had been locked (such as playing PS1 games which you've purchased). It was never anyone's attempt for this to lead to a security breach and if sony's security had been superior to a thin sheet of plastic wrap it never would have. Things get unlocked every day. Every cell phone worth mentioning had the same thing done to it as the PS3. You don't hear about every single phone company leaking personal information, do you?

Sorry to bring facts into your unfounded rage.

"Exploring security" and publicly posting findings sounds a lot like breaching an access control to me. And anytime an access control is breached, it opens the door for malicious behavior (even if that wasn't the intent). And just because someone says something doesn't mean it reflects their actual intentions. Believe it or not, people lie. However, if the Copyright Office has ruled that it isn't then I have no say in the matter and remove my previous comment.

Well, luckilly it takes far more to convict people of crimes in the United States than the prosecutor ensuring jurors that people lie.

Also, as I've already stated it wasn't geohot's hack which lead to this. Rebug likely wouldn't have been neccessary if Sony hadn't draconianly dissabled all PS3's which installed linux. What allowed the breach was posing as a developer console, not linux.

I don't see what's wrong here. The Copyright Office has already declared that jailbreaking is legal, and jailbreaking the iPad opens up a lot of features that Apple left out. Stop making a big deal out of nothing.

No, the Copyright Office has ruled it to be fair use under the DMCA. What he's doing is perfectly legal, and there's nothing wrong with it.

That ruling only applies to phones and other mobile devices. The iPad 2 probably falls under that category, but the PS3 does not.

Jailbreaking is legal so don't get all butthurt. Good for him, at least he is finding a legal outlet for his "talents".

-Makaveli-

PlayStation cell, lets face it he has been in those already. you keep defending what you think makes you look good to those who know nothing about the term HACKING. George would be known in the trade as a scriptkiddy nothing more.

PS you want Linux get a f........ pc.

Linux can be used to hack the PS3, hence why it was removed.

Word. I couldn't care less what people do with their own stuff, but when it starts affecting other people you are overstepping your bounds and your "consumer rights." If it weren't for all the malicious stuff people do with these types of things they probably wouldn't be such a big deal to begin with. Keep it classy and I have no problem with it.

[QUOTE="The_Rick_14"][QUOTE="-Makaveli-"]

-Makaveli-

Rebug is a result of Geohotz releasing the master keys on the net, so if the PSN hack was a result of Rebug then Geohotz is at least somewhat responsible. You can believe what you want and spin it how you want, but Sony has acted in the best way possible for the benefit of not only themselves but the greater majority of their users and network community. Hackers used linux to breach the system, so Sony removed it. Hackers used CFW to put linux back on there, so Sony banned their s***. Doing things you are supposed to do results in consequences. If you can't use a console for its intended use then just don't buy the damn thing to begin with. Its that simple.

[QUOTE="jcopp72"]why is he allowed to do this? he should be arrested and sent to jail then when bubba gets him he can talk about why he is a pisant.-Makaveli-
I think it would be far more constructive if you could tell us why he shouldn't be allowed to. Clearly he is allowed to, since he exists within society and there's news articles declaring his intent. So, why oh why and under what law should he be jailed?

I didn't say that it was against the law, I am saying that it should be against the law. and you sir are a hacker your self??? if not then why defend them?

[QUOTE="blabbyboy"][QUOTE="-Makaveli-"] Wait, so some dude modifying his own ps3 to run linux = some other dude actually stealing my life savings? 'kay-Makaveli-

No. The people who hacked psn used Geohotz software.

Okay, and where did "Cyberskunk" get the tools to make such a thing. Shesh, why do you think Sony sued geo? They were scared that things like this would happen, and my rage is founded thank you very much :)

Uhhh it's called Terms of service for a reason, that would mean if he breaks the terms that means he gets no service (ie PSN). Breaking the TOS doesn't mean you break the law....

What you are referring to is the EULA (end user license agreement). This would usually be considered a contractual agreement between the purchaser and the person/company selling the product. First off it's not considered a criminal offense to break a contract (you don't go to jail for that) that's why I lol every time some one suggests it. Besides that, the contract has to be agreed to at the time of sale not after the sale of the product was already made ( a judgement in a case covering just this topic outlined this very thing: http://www.internetlibrary.com/cases/lib_case209.cfm ). Thus once he paid for the system any EULA that wasn't agreed to BEFORE the purchase would basically mean absolutely nothing.

Of course I'm no expert,I'm a pissed off playstation plus subscriber who plays f...... DC universe and i want it back. and what are you talking about? he started it by hacking the ps3 and giving the keys out to others who then with or without him knowing went ahead and robbed 77 million accounts, this is why i moan about it,why the f.... would you not get that.
