Just took my COD4 disc out of my drive to put in DMC4 and as the light caught the disc, i noticed a VERY VERY fine "hairline" 1cm scratch in a straight line going outwards around the middle of the disc.

The rest of the disc was immaculate, tbh and I havent noticed any disc read/skipping/locking up errors.

I havent dropped the disc and i always treat my games with care (back in the case after use, etc) so I'm wondering how this got there?

Does anybody else have a really tiny blemish on their discs and have they noticed any degredation in game play? I've heard so much contrasting info about Blu-ray, its not even funny from the "its impossible to scratch and if you do, you may as well use it as a coaster" to "you can rub wire wool on it for a week, bury it, dig it up another week later and the ps3 will play it caked in muck"

Cheers for any comeback,

Dude

You should try to whipe it off because Blu Ray discs are supposed to be able to resist damage from a screwdriver. It might not be a scratch. If it is I would be very surprised.

By the way i got my information off of Wikipedia. The protective layer on a blu ray is a fraction of anything else used before but exponentially stronger and more resistant.

That's amazing, i looked it up again and found this from Wikipedia:

ON BLU RAY DISCS: "Since the Blu-ray data layer is closer to the surface of the disk, compared to the DVD standard, it was at first more vulnerable to scratches. The first discs were housed in cartridges for protection. Advances in polymer technology eventually made the cartridges unnecessary.TDK was the first company to develop a working scratch protection coating for Blu-ray discs. It was named Durabis."

On DURABIS: "One of its principal applications at first will be for scratch resistance in Blu-ray Disc and other optical discs. It is claimed to be tough enough to resist screwdriver damage and make scratched optical discs (CDs and DVDs) a thing of the past. To meet Blu-ray's specifications, TDK's coating had to be less than 0.1 mm thick, be hard enough to resist considerable damage, and yet be transparent enough to be easily read. According to a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the process essentially spin-coats two layers onto discs. One is for protection against scratches, and the other protects against stains and oils."

And a confirmation article from CNET: "In a test conducted by CNET News.com, a DVD treated with TDK's coating survived a determined attack with a screwdriver and a Sharpie permanent marker with no effect on playability"

So I don't know what happened.

I know, which is why I was bemused to be honest. I did read about Durabis and thought "how the heck could I have done this?"

It still works, so who cares.

Fine.

Perhaps when you were putting the disc into the system, the disc got a minor scratch from the 'velvet' slip as the PS3 sucks the disc in.
