As Finals are drawing to a close and Red Dead Redemption's release steadily approaching, i thought of no better way to prepare and get ready for the game other than watching the best Western movie out there.

So, in your opinion, what is the best Western?

(Things to think about: best story, best characters, best gunfights, etc).

Not the absolute best out there (still fantastic), and not strictly Western, but the Firefly series and Serenity are great. Western Sci-fi.

What a coincidence. IGN just released a feature called "Top 25 Westerns of All Time".

I agree with most of the list actually.

Anything with Clint (the Badass) Eastwood is a great western thrill.

I had the same idea as you, but I've already got my movies lined up: Tombstone, Unforgiven, and possibly Back To The Future III. :P

Unforgiven is imo the best Western ever. It won the Oscar for best picture. It's not your typical sphagetti western tho.

Also, 3: 10 to yuma is pretty good too.

oh yeah. I would recommend you watch tombstone if you want to get excited about a western video game. If you want to watch one of the greatest Westerns of all time with a slow, but great story and amazing characters, then watch Unforgiven. BTW, did anyone like the movie, "Wyatt Earp"? This movie also has the famous battle of 'tombstone' in it. It's a long movie that runs about 2 and a half hours. I kinda liked it.

Not really. The game looks to be a cinematic experience. It'd be like watching the Indiana Jones movies or some other action / adventure movies before playing the Uncharted games. You get to see the cool stuff that happens in those movies and then you get to do it in-game.

I could recommend super obvious ones that I'm sure have already been mentioned, but I'd rather mention a slightly less well known film that I think deserves mountains more attention then it receives.

Dead Man

One of my all-time favorites.

One of my absolute favorite westerns is Open Range. It's a newer movie and it's just very good. If we're talking old school westerns, I would go for just about anything with Clint Eastwood or John Wayne starring in them.

Sergio Leone movies for sure, in particular Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

But the be all, end all ultimate western (which no one has even mentioned yet!) is The Searchers, the best and most c!assic western by John Ford and John Wayne. It's stunningly beautiful and timeless.

pic

Unforgiven is Clint Eastwood's swan song to the old west, which sort of fits in with what RDR is trying to do (set during the last throws of the old west), but I doubt the game will be so eloquent.

Tombstone was okay but a little too "Hollywood" for me.

EDIT: Oops, almost forgot about The Magnificent Seven, the western remake of Seven Samurai. Starring me, Steve McQueen.

BINGO!

Once Upon a Time in the West, is the greatest western ever made. Its also Charlie Bronsons best movie (imo)

This film inspired a whole generation of filmakers. Like Tarantino & Rodrigues..

I wouldnt be surprised if RDR makes references to it.

Thanks for the list guys. Keep'em coming. I can't wait until finals are over to watch some of these.

Also, as someone above me pointed out, you guys should really check out "The Assassination of Jesse James." It is a fantastic film--from plot, to character development, to cinematography, to acting (especially Casey Affleck).

If you watch any movies listed on IGNs top 25 westerns, be very wary, Ive seen most of them, the number 3 spot was SHANE, i watched it with my dad as hes a huge movie buff, but i coudnt stand it lol.

The wild bunch is great, any clint eastwood movie, just like i said in my previous post. theres a lot of classics out there.

I love Tombstone, but its corny as hell in my opinion .
