If you're only looking for main installment games, then I'd say 7, 9 and 10. If you mean just any FF game, I'd say Tactics, 7 and 10. Why are you avoiding installments 1-6?
My favorite is VIII by far! I think that you should play VII, VIII, and IX. Those have the best story lines and they have the best original turn-based gameplay.
I don't know why you are not interested in the earlier games but FFVI is my favorite FF so I'm going to recomend it anyway.
I've only just started FFVIII and I'm going to wait until FFIX is on PSN before starting that one so I can't recommend them (although FFIX does get rated highly amongst fans).
If you haven't played FFVII then you need to, just to see what the fuss is about even though it is not the best.
As I didn't play FFXI that leaves FFX and FFXII - I preferred the combat in FFXII, but overall FFX held my interest more even though it is more linear.
Why the hell would you ignore IV and VI? They have remakes if you can't handle "older-looking games". Anyways, fitting your criteria, my favorites are X, VII, and XIII in that order.
why is everyone being offended by his criteria, lol? maybe he doesn't like 2D graphics, or maybe he's already played them all? whatever his reason he shouldn't be talked down to like he has no right to choose....

You can pick up FFVII and FFVIII from PSN store and FFX is must as well if you still have PS2 arround. If you can find it, I highly, highly recommend FFVI and you should get PSP for FFVII Crisis Core and FF: Dissidia. :)
You should really think about FFIV (4) it is a great game but on topic (No specific order) -Final Fantasy VIII ( 8 ) -Final Fantasy VII ( 7 ) -Final Fantasy X ( 10 )

Get 7, 10 & 13. That's the first one on PS1, the first one on PS2 & the first one on PS3. Then go from there. If you don't like any of those, then yeah you should give up. 8 & 10-2 are very good as well, but 7 & 10 should be played first. 9 & 12 are decent but not essential... & I didn't play 11 because I never play MMOs.
Can you tell us why you don't want 1-6? I haven't played those but I definitely want to at least get 6 if it hits the PSN store.
ff9, ff7, tactics or ff10. if you still want more you can pick up ff3 and ff4 remakes for the ds. here's hoping for a ff6 remake! there may be a few hit or miss.. but ff is a wonderful series.
The problem with this thread is that everyone has different favorite games... for example, i would say VIII, IX, and XIII

Yes that is why I actually think that he should not listen to any of us. FF7 to FF13 are all superb and what he needs to do is to sit down and some google some pictures. Which game is looking more interesting? What settings do you like? I prefer more medieval and more fantasy-ish style so that's why I prefer FFIX the most but then there are more trashy future world like FF7 and FF8 which also feels more futuristic but more fantasy instead of trashy like FF7.
