Sorry to burst your extremely PS3 fanboy biased bubble... but these are videogames, achievements and trophies are completely worthless....
I mean come on "meaningless number"??? Really, I don't think any of these games are that important. Leaderboards achievements trophies... jeez, it's all just a way of saying "HA, I play game way more than you do!"
Also, I STILL haven't seen that much about the PS3's trophy system, but it sounds kinda cool. Although I really doubt it will have much more importance/relevance than achievements... if any...

as worthless as achievements might seem, a lot of 360 owners (including myself) have a slight, if not full blown, addiction to it. it makes sense though, considering that scores were the initial award system when video games came about.
going back on topic... i'm still on the fence on whether trophies will be cool. if there is a way i can access the trophy system (both mine and others') without having to go through Home, then it would be cool as achievements. i think that is why achievements got so big in the first place. if they weren't accessible from the system's UI and if you couldn't readily see their score in their sigs in forums, i think less people would care about them. Trophies have to have that same accessibility.
I like Trophies, because you can actually see them and show them off. Instead of just a number. But then again, it would be nice if you could actually gain something from getting trophies, like, if you unlock 50% of the trophies in a game, you get a shirt with that games name on it in Home, 100% and you get a complete skin/costume of one of that games characters. How sweet would it be to have a Snake costume... OMG win.0rin
i doubt ull ever get anything tangible for playing games... mainly because u can cheat to get these achievements or trophies...
right i thought the xbox 360 acheivement's were goood becuase that was the console i got first , and there's only about 5people including me /out of 150 in my year who a 360 and some of my friend's compare and i was like (it's just a number , nothing good,
maybe if me and my friends played every same game , it would be more comparable , but there
like 10,000 and i just say wooh ,just to stop them , becuase there just (digits) numbers (nothing interesting)
so personaly i think the playstation trophies make more sense because 1 they are more relistic
(what dose a racer get if they win a race in real life)
what dose a winning football team get if they win)
trophie's they so look better , but this is only on home which i can wait for.
I was wondering what people thought about the PS3 supposed trophy system. Do you think it is a more appealing idea, seeing as it is hopefully harder, and you will get something more tangable out of it? Or, would you rather just build up some meaningless number?W3dotCOM

I am quite offended that you would call me a fanboy. You obviously know nothing about me. And even though you don't think they are important, it would seem, as seen thought point addicts, that other people go crazy for them.
so you need home to use/view Trophies? home seems pretty lame to me so I'm definitely not interested in Trophies
btw Achievements arn't just some dumb number, you'd be surprised in how much replay value they bring to games, I think there alot of fun and you get a rewarding feeling after you unlock them

If the achievement point total is a meaningless number then is the trophies level number meaningless also.
There both excatly the same systems, except in one you unlock an achievement for a certain task in the other you unlock a trophy and these small unlocks add to your total score/level, there are different difficulty types that will give you more points or a higher ranking trophy(worth more points to the overall games completion score/overall level score).
Some achievements are really easy some are really hard, same with trophies.
Basicly they are excatly the same thing only with a different visual twist.
And since all 360 games have achivements and only 1 ps3 games has trophies, obviously achivements is better, when most ps3 games have trophies they will then be equal as they are both the same concept.

You say the trohies ar more realistic, eh they are just a 2d image on your tv screen.
A racer also gets a points total to add to its season total.
A football team also gets points for a win adding to there season total.
Im not a big fan of trophies/achievements, there a nice concept and add a little to my gaming expierences but im not a score whore, but what gets me about this "argument" which is better is THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME THING only with a different visual style. they are both fine.
Okay, obviously most people voting here don't own a 360. Achievements are an intrinsic part of every single game, arcade or retail release. For this reason, Achievements are superior to Trophies, as devs can choose to implement them or not.
And as pointless as both systems may seem, there's just something about hearing that dinky little sound and seeing your "reward" in the top right hand corner of your screen as you land a 100 hit combo, get a long streak of vehicular takedowns, or hit that $500,000 dollar mark. I can't really describe it. A nice, relatively meaningless addition to games that have the potential to add replay value. Why all the haters?

Well it's a PS3 forum after all
I like the achievement better because it gives you both a gamer score and an icon for each achievement. And the icons are tailored to the achievements, which is cool. And the online display of those achievement is pretty sweet through the xbox website. So, yeah.
i have a 360 and i want a ps3 but i think trophies are cooler because one of my friends told me that you level up as you get trophies and there are bronze silver and gold trophies this sound better that acheivement because with achievements all u get is u number that goes up
gamer score over 30000
Okay here's the end of this discussion right here. The reason Trophies are better than Achievements (slightly!) is simple: Trophies show skill. See Achievements are just points that you rack up for doing whatever the game requires. The difference between completing an easy goal and a hard one is that the hard ones will give you more points. BUT a person can be an achievement whore and just play a lot of crappy games or do a lot of the easier tasks and still get a lot of points right? That's not a show of skill.
Trophies on the other hand come in levels. A silver is worth a lot more than a bronze, a gold is worth more than...you get it. That means a person with a few golds (or a platinum) in just a few games will have a higher level than a person with dozens of bronzes across a lot of different games. Your number (level) is still just as pointless as the one on XBL since you don't win anything, but at least this number shows not just that you played a lot of games, but also that you worked hard on those games.
One more thing: Home. First of all, trophies are viewable from the XMB, so you don't even need home to see and compare. Second, Home will have 3D representations of the more prestigious trophies (most likely the golds and platinums). So yes the reward is still pointless but it at least does more than just give you a number, plus it takes your skil at specific games into account. That makes it slightly better.
Yea my initial take was that I could care less, but when I bought Stardust, I found myself trying new things for trophies.
With that said, trophies or achievements...when they're done to get you to do things you wouldnt ever try, they do add replay value so I voted don't care. With that said, I would not purchase a $60 game just to get some trophies.

I agree. and I wouldn't let a lack there of stop me from buying or playing a game either

just because i have more trophies then you do doesn't mean i play more games then you do. it simply just means im better then you are at them...speaking generally not specifically to you. i personally am a completionist in any games that i enjoy playing. trophies are nice since they let me show off to other people that im not just blowin smoke out my ass. and no you cant cheat to get them either. trophies and save files are all linked to PSN id. meaning you cant simply download a complete save file and have every trophy. final fantasy 13/versus 13+trophies/achievments=epic win for me.

Sorry to burst your bubble... but trophies don't show how long you play a game, they show your over all skill in that game. I can play 5 different games for like 5 mins a day, and you can play those same 5 for 6 hours a day. If you just suck, you can't rack up a million easy points and have the higher score like in Achievements. Sure you can get all 20 of the bronze trophies but If I get 5 - 10 gold/platinum trophies, not only will it show I have more skill then you, but my level will also be higher than yours. That will be the difference with trophies and how they will be more(if only slightly) significant.
My opion and my opion only I would allow a user to build points, then you should be able to cash in thoses points with the vendor. To get Beta keys or map expandsions.
I think this thread should be on system wars forums.:P Back on topic, I think that Trophies or Achivements aren't the things that makes buy a game but it makes you play more the game to unlock Trophies/Achivements.:PPrimo295
now a mod will come along and lock it because achievements were mentioned in a ps3 thread :P, this place is toutchy. i personally dont like the system wars thread, it makes my brain hurt. i like ps3 so i stick to the ps3 thread, but that doesnt limit the conversation to only ps3 related news. games are games, not all topics that stray from ps3 should go to system wars.
I like both because they're (at best) a checklist for full completion of the product, written by the people who created it and, thusly, know what's to be seen... arranged in a way to sorta feed that compulsive side of me.
I tended to kinda go OCD all over achievements though, so I kinda weaned myself off, lol. I find trophies don't give you that same level of addiction... which is a good thing to me.
Neither of them can compare to a good-old-fashioned high score list (now known as leaderboard), though.

btw you dont need home to view trophies, there is a trophy collection icon on the XMB, that lets you scroll through trophies by game, and you can also use the friends list.
