Like with the Ps2 and now the Ps3, I don't ever turn the back switch off unless I have to unplug and move my console.

It's actually safer to leave it in standby. Either way shouldn't hurt your console, however if you have a surge protector then I recommend leaving it in standby. That way the parts won't cool down and then suddenly have current flowing through them.

Turning that switch off is like pulling the power cable out of your PC. except your PC doesn't have a standby mode.

I always turned my PS2 off by the button at the back, it was just quicker than having to hold the stupid green button down.

Yeah I was gonna say. The PS3 doesn't use over $250 when it is in standby each year. That's not even logical.... just doesn't make sense.

1 watt in standby and 24 while turned on makes A LOT more sense. The PS3 barely uses any electricity in standby.

That's not in stand-by, that's turned on.

In standby it uses next to nothing, unlike a CRT tv (which is where the "leaving your tv on standby will drown the world blablabla" comes from) there is no fat-ass capacitor to charge, so it pretty much is just that LED.

Well power is included in my rent so I leave mine on. I also realize good electronics have standbys for a reason. It's better for the system not to be powered up from nothing every time you use it. Long term system health vs long term power bill...

No it won't. Read the link I left you... It only uses 1 watt in standby, which equates to a couple of cents per year, and uses 24 watts when turned on. The onlt time it actually uses alot of wattage is when it's Folding@home, which is understandable because Folding@home uses 100% of the cell.

I am pretty sure it is healthier for electronics to be left in standby. Else they would just make it so the PS3 would turn off.

But as someone said, if you turn it off completely all the components inside lose heat and any electricity. Then you are doing a sudden jolt when you turn it back on. While standby keeps a small flow through, although it uses very little electricity.

But then you couldn't turn it on with your contorller :O

I caclulated the costs as 23pounds per year when left on standby (11 pence per kwh)

Wow nobody must have read that............. It just said the the PS3 uses more enery when it is TURNED ON but NOT BEING USED. It never said anything about standby, and it does not harm the system. Just like with some people who leave their computers on 24/7, this is what they're talking about. So if you kept your PS3 on for 24/7 for a whole year, it would cost more than a fridge would in terms of energy consumption. In any case, your PS3 is fine when you put it on standby mode. Turning it off and on from the back power switch will eventually over the long run do something bad to your PS3 or any device one time or another. What that is, I have no idea.

And then that link was debunked as false... From people who actually ran tests and didn't pull facts out of their asses.

I also forgot to mention, that the only time to turn it off from behind completely is when you are going on vacation or are not going to be playing your PS3 for an extended period of time, in which that case it is recommended to do so because you never know when the power could go out and short your PS3. Also when you do that, unplug it as well.

I turn it off at the front and then turn it off at the back simply because I have an overseas console and I have it plugged into a power socket adapter and I don't want to risk leaving it on overnight just in case something happens at that converter.
