This is probably a dumb question. Is there a way to turn off the ps3 from the xmb using the controller?

Well i notice during when your ingame you have the option to turn system off, but when I'm in the xmb and i press the ps button, nothing pops up. the only thing i see pop up is the battery life. I just want to find a way to turn off the system from the xmb without me gettin up or going into a game to turn it off.

When in XMB, press and hold the PS button and the option for turning off your console will be available.

If you tap the PS button when in the XMB menu it gives the battery state of charge but if you hold the PS button down then it will go to the shut down menu.

I am still confused how to use my PS3, is there like a Idiot's guide to using a PS3 somewhere?? lol its way too high tech for me. I don't know how to turn it off when i am playing a game or go back to the main menu when in a game, Like the proper way. Cause for the PS2, you could just press the power switch on the back to turn it off, but thats not the proper way, you could screw ur ps2, you would have to hold the power button then put it on standby then turn off, can someone tell me if its the same way? like is that even the correct way to turn it off?

if you are playing a game, just hit the PS button, and a menu will pop up. You will see the "Quit Game" option. This will take you back to the XMB.

If you are at the XMB and want to turn the PS3 off, just hold down the PS button for like 3 seconds, and a menu will pop up and you will see the "Shutdown Console"(or something similar) option

Well, when you are playing a game, you can just press the PS button in the middle of your Controller and a list of option will pop up which one of those option will allow you to quite your game and go back to the XMB (cross media bar/main menu). However, if you haven't update your firmware, you might have to hold down the PS button before such option can be available.

When you at the XMB, you can hold down the PS button which the option to shut down your PS3 will be available. You can also turn off your controller or switch controller port that way. After you have shut down your PS3 completely, the lights will turn red, you can now switch off the power at the back of your PS3.
