I have never once turned off the power switch on the back of my ps3, ps2 or pc. I just leave them in standby and have never had a problem. That said, in theory, if you leave it on, or in standby, or even turn the switch off on the back but leave it plugged in, there's the possibility of a surge (say if your house is directly hit by lightning) coming up the line and frying it. It is possible even if you use surge protectors, but most surge protectors have warranties to replace equipment plugged into them. Anyway the chance is very very small. That's about the only difference between unplugging it and just switching it off from the back. Realisticly, though, neither is really necessary.

I'm not sure if it's healthy for your system, but I doubt that it will damage it as long as the red light is on.

I don't like the red light, and I don't like switching the power off. So I leave it in the green light!

I always unplug them during a thunderstorm, otherwise I leave them in standby. Actually, most all surge protectors, even expensive component types, say to unplug during an electrical storm. Don't know 100% if that means they won't cover you if you do leave it. Though, Panamax surge protectors seem to always have lightning support, so if it was plugged in, you are protected, or also atleast covered if it does damage your equipment.

I never turn my system off unless there is a storm close by, then I put it in standby before shutting the main power swith off and unplugging the main power.

if u want to turn your ps3 off correctly go to main menu and hold the ps button till a black screen pops up and select "turn of system" then wait like 30 seconds untill its off and on standby (the little red light is on) then flip the power switch off
