Good idea to put that in a spoiler or put spoiler in your title. Anybody that hasn't played the game (but plan to) or haven't made it far enough to know this will get mad. haven't played the game for a few months, but I believe

[spoiler] I remember the monsters but I totally forgot why & how they became that way. I kind of started a playthrough again but I'm not very far into it. I do remember not liking that part of the game very much. Overall the game is great. That one part, though........... [/spoiler]
It was my opinion first of all, and second of all it felt out of place because for most of th game you were running around finding clues and fighting "evil" antagonists. You want to get to the treasure before them and then all of a sudden omg zombie Spaniard things. It just didn't flow very well. Everything before that seemed realistic in a way but then the game shoves curses and possessed people in your face. I just didn't like the twist.

The treasure cursed the Spaniards. No they are not just random monsters.
Change the title to something like "uncharted spaniards (spoilers)" if you really want to have this discussion. This thread title could have potentially ruined the entire twist to this game for me (which I thought was the best part). Luckily I've already beaten it.
While we're on the subject, those zombie things looked pretty uninspired, or more like your generic zombie monster, minus the ripped clothes and brown shoe with the tip ripped off, revealing ugly toe nails. They were like Smeagle from those Lord of the Ring movies. Or maybe like Kratos, had he been starved for years.
I think it worked well in the story having monsters, I mean a cursed treasure in a treasure hunt game is actually pretty cliche. So it was far from out of place in my opinion. Also like its been said TC change the topic title or it will be deleted.

Those monster are the spanish soldiers who were after El Dorado, but they never had the chance to leave the place. So they got evolved/mutated to those creatures. Kind of like the movie "CAVE".

I think he was the ruler/king of the Aztecs/Incas. Someone like a Pharoah
