I was thinking this weekend and most times that can be dangerous.  But this time I actually might have made a good point.

For awhile now, a lot of us have been waiting for Sony to update the system software to up-convert DVD's to look better on an HDTV.  Every time a new system update comes around you'll see someone upset that the feature was left out again.

I think Sony is waiting on purpose.  If they can get PS3 owners to invest in some Blu-ray movies, they might get the good jump on HD-DVD they're looking for.  If they made DVDs look better, some PS3 owners may not invest in blu-ray.  So, I think it will be until, at least, next Christmas before they add this up-convert feature.

I'm not missing it too bad, blu-ray looks great and DVD's aren't too aweful on and HDTV.  What do you guys think?  Is it right for Sony to do this?  Is it smart?

I love blu-ray, so don;t come at me like I'm downing it or Sony. I'm making the point that they MAY be holding the update back to promote blu-ray. You are one of the kinds of people I was hoping wouldn't reply to my post. You have no intellegent thoughts, obviously.

mm wow good job no intellegent tought huh i just told you blu-ray is winning 9:2 in sales it does not need help selling or promoteing sony does plenty of that in casino royale and every where else why would they hold back and piss there fans off? they want to make the consumer happy and im happy and the update will come in time when they find out how to do it

Aren't the scalers in most newer HDTVs better than what an upscaling dvd player/ xbox 360/ ps3 could do?  Even though my PS3 doesn't upscale, I don't notice a quality difference between it and my 360.  I believe this is because no matter what my TV displays in 1080p  (samsung HLS-6187).

no your tv does not upscale it its at 1080p at the menu and on blu-ray movies and games that are 1080p dvds are 480p pop in a dvd and click info on your tv and see if it says 1280x480p or 1920x1080p

You misunderstood what he said. He is right in that everything that his TV displays is in 1080p. Fixed pixel displays like his (and LCD's and Plasmas) are only capable of displaying their native resolution. In order to display other resolutions like 720p or 1080i they must be either downscaled, upscaled and/or either de-interlaced depending on the native resolution of the TV. To do this HDTV's do have their own scalers. However, (and this is where he was mistaken) most lack in quality and an external scaler is preferred. When you click on the info it's merely showing you what the input feed is.

My worry is that the upscaling of 720P games to 1080i (for those of us with 480p/1080i, no 720P) will be included with the DVD upscaling. If they delay the upscaling feature, they are screwing over all the 480p/1080i tv owners.  Basically I bought Resistance, but haven't bought anything since because I would rather not play downscaled games on my HDTV.  When good games come out that support 1080i, i will consider purchasing.  Until then, I am going to sit back and wait.

Interpolating a DVD to a higher res does nothing but lowers the image quality. Its not a major feature so its not a major priority.

They should fix the fact that the ps3 is a terrible dvd player for starters... then worry about upscaling.

anybody who thinks that Sony is "trying" to add the functionality of upconverting DVDs on the PS3 is just out of their mind. Why would Sony allow their BLU-RAY PLAYER to upconvert DVDs? Sony wants to get a huge lead on HD-DVD. They want a lead big enough that HD-DVD will not be able to come back from. Once this lead happens, then we may see upconverting DVDs on the PS3. You want more proof? Sony announced a couple of weeks ago that they were going to slash the prices of stand-alone blu-ray players, and they were going to count on the sales of movies to get their money back. This is another reason Sony will not add upconverting DVDs to the PS3.

I have an upconvert DVD player, so no biggie to me. I would like to get out of my system though and just use the PS3.

You know what's funny?  My friend sweared on his life that the PS3 was already cabable of upscaling DVDs (and he works with a lot of technology).  I kept arguing that it didn't have it yet, but he wouldn't listen.  I should show him this topic, lol.

If Sony *could* upscale, but were putting it off to wait for blu-ray sales to increase, couldn't they just enable the PS3 to upscale games (ps1/ps2/ps3)?  If that is all they were holding it off for, enabling the upscaling of games wouldn't make much of a difference.  I own a PS3, but I can also admit that they are probably still trying to decide on the best way to enable their system to upscale without performance taking a huge hit.

Phil Harrison did say the PS3 will upscale DVDs "out of the box" but everyone was shocked to find out that it didn't.

I don't remember ever seeing that said. I do remember Harrison stating that it would be added with a firmware upgrade.

Yes he did say it will upscale out of the box and imagine he is suppose to be a head PR guy. Google it if you don't believe it's true.

You guys have serious issues if you think an upscaled-dvd, even on the best on the planet, can ever compare to the real HD version and hurt the sales. The ads that say upscale to near HD quality are crazy, no where near. And upscaling is not what it's all about, it's also about imaging chips to help remove aliasing and compression noise, that separates a decent upscaler for a crappy one.

In the PS3 case I don't think it would particularly hurt. I can understand an average consumer going with a $100 upscaler (and tricked into a $100 HDMI cable) over a $1000 Blu-ray player. But with the PS3, they already have the Blu-ray player built-in, advertised all over the box, not upscaling. And Blu-ray can play both on component and HDMI for HD, while upconverting DVDs would be limited to HDMI. So why whould they skip Blu-ray when they already have it just to upscale dvds. Cheaper movie prices you might say, well, you can rent instead.

I mean it's hard to tell what the average consumer cares about. My 40 year old female roommate has always chosen to watch her movies in her bedroom on an $80 20inch tv from Target when the living room has both an HD-DVD and Blu-ray player on a $3000+ soundsytem and 55inch 720p tv.

I'm not sure upconverting is that big of a deal for DVDs on PS3.  You can pick up an upconverting DVD player for less than $100 now. Secondly a lot of 1080p TVs including my own automatically upconvert all signals to either 720p or 1080p.

Your 1080p TV has to convert all to 1080p or else it wouldn't fill the screen, if it converted to 720p then it would be small in the center half the pixels.
