I just switched my PS3 on and noticed that the automatic update feature downloaded the new firmware for me, strange because I haven't seen it advertised anywhere. It's a very minor update but at least we're 0.01 close to the 4.0 update. :PMushroomWig
I wonder if we will get a major update at 4.0. It would be great to see some new features.

X.0 updates are usually pretty big, Cross-Game chat is out of the question though so it's a wonder what they'll end up adding. I wouldn't mind an updated profile section and the ability to change our PSN names.[QUOTE="MushroomWig"]I just switched my PS3 on and noticed that the automatic update feature downloaded the new firmware for me, strange because I haven't seen it advertised anywhere. LOL.
That's hilarious...
wait, you serious?
Sony doesn't add features to the ps3 anymore. The next big one will be more likely to take away a big feature.
Then again, I'm surprised this update did anything at all useful. They should've done it years ago but I'm still surprised. I was firmly convinced that any furtherps3 updates would just be anti-hacking measures like the psp's sad fate.
If they do anything useful with 4.0 (that doesn't require Plus), I might actually recommend the ps3 to someone.

You're implying that other-OS was a big feature to begin with, in reality it was used by a fraction of users. There's no reason you couldn't recommend the PS3 to anyone right now, I don't see how a firmware update is going to change that.[QUOTE="LeifLongbottom"][QUOTE="moej88"]

There's no reason you couldn't recommend the PS3 to anyone right now, I don't see how a firmware update is going to change that.On the contrary, if they started adding features to the machine, I would think that there's still hope for it. So far Sony has shown about the same amount of interest in supporting the platform as third party publishers have: just enough to not render the thing completely useless.
And my perspective isn't based on just my experience with the ps3 but the psp as well.
Regardless though, firmware updates are supposed to improve things, taking things away from the experience (even things that aren't often used) is the opposite direction I would've liked to have seen the console go in.
But you're right, even if they do add another feature or two, it wont change the fact that we still get the crappiest ports of this generation. The third party publishers would have to show some effort too before I start recommending the ps3 again.

I found this and it shows some cool concepts.moej88
Now, I love this picture;
One thing I can't stand right now is how we still don't get an audio notification whenever a message is received.
agreed. Audio notifactions would be cool.
and regarding the picture. It cools to see the integration of Ps home to the XMB. Although I personally do not use Pshome at all, I still think its a cool concept that may have potentional.
Hopefully Sony is keeping track of such posts on thier blog to get ideas and innovate.

I was saying you're half right about my opinion being changed.
You seemed to be under the impression that Sony offering better support of the ps3 wouldn't change anyone recommending the machine or not. I was just saying that it would on one hand because it would show that sony is at least still interested in the machine but it wouldn't in the sense that most third party publishers would still be satisfied building their games on the 360 and making quick & crappy ports to the ps3. That would still make it hard to recommend the ps3.
The crappy thing is that even though the 360 gets much better support from MS & third party publishers, I'm even less likely to get a game for it because I have an old one and I think it's about one deathmatch away from spontaneously combusting...not that I'm fool enough to pay them for online anyway.
I would get behind the PC platform but that seems to get crappy ports from the publishers. It's like this whole part of the game industry is trying to stuff itself down the toilet as fast as possible. The one console that get's the best version of the games we get hyped up about spent most of it's time for this console cycle with a 50% failure rate.
