Hi all,

I just got my PS3 slim and i wanted to get it all setup. I happened to stumble upon an article on Engadget that stated that updating the firmware to 3.0/3.0.1 was making the blu ray drives unusable for games/blu-ray movies.

Has anyone here encountered this? I dont want to upgrade my firmware and not be able to play any games, but then again i want to connect to the PS3 store for demos/themes etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

It may be happening to a verrrrrry small number of them but then again, maybe the blu-ray drive was already starting to go in those systems before the update. Go ahead and grab the latest version.

After the update my 80gb model is still rockin and playing Blu-ray movies smoothly. Also I haven't came across any game freezes, except Godfather 2 but that game is full of bugs so that's why it may freeze at times hehe.

Yeah, the only freeze I had was with MUA2 in huge fight scene but that was right after a non-compatible(well I mean it froze as it was working for most of the game)PS2disc(darkwatch) froze while playing at a certain part of the game over and over. I have the 80gb BC model that uses Software emulation with the graphicschip and some games have issues like thisone.Since then I haven't had an issue with freezing. Too bad darkwatch was a cool game to play co-op but it just froze and I think I was about 3/4 of the way trough the game with my g/f. It was definitely compatiblity issues as I returned the disc and it froze at the same spot with the new disc. I just got my money back from gamespot then.

I downloaded both the 3.0 and when 3.01 was released I downloaded it as well and never had a single problem (I have a 60 gig PS3). I did notice that the on-line seems to be somewhat more stable and possibly a little faster after these updates.

You don't have to update to 3.0.1 to use PSN, it was intended mainly for Uncharted and the other games freezing problems.

However if it's forcing you to do so, then there's a problem. Also, I don't think every Slim has the problem. If in doubt, you still have your warranty, but I think you should just check it out a bit more.

Actually it messed up my ps3, i can still start it up but the disk drive doesnt work. I thought they said the problem was only in the older fat consoles... mainly the ones with a 90nm chip?

3.01 is required to play Tekken 6. Totally pissed me off. Had I known I wouldn't have bought it. I just hope they come up with another patch to fix the issues 3.01 introduced. I'd recommend against updating to 3.01 if you can help it though.

3.01 breaks games to fix the Uncharted 1 bug. If you aren't playing Uncharted 1 (or Tekken 6), there is no need to mess with your firmware with this OPTIONAL update.

Ratchet and Clank a Crack in Time required an update to 3.0.1.

I just updated my BC 80gb PS3 this afternoon and my roomate has been playing R&C for hours now.I didn't realize that there was supposed to be a problem with 3.0.1. Oh well, it doesn't look like it messed up anything. (BTW,I didn't have any problems with playing uncharted either before or after the 3.0 update)
