When I switch my hard drive will I be able to keep "ALL" of my data that was stored on the old hard when I transfer the memory from it to the new one, such as add-ons, downloaded premium themes, games, and so on. or will I have to pay for them again.

My way requires a USB storage device (either simple flash/thumb drive or an external HDD)

The best advice I have for you is to delete all of the GAME DATA. This should be the majority of your used HDD space. Now, hopefully you will have enough space and the best way is to use the PS3's 'BACKUP' feature. Hopefully you have some a big enough USB storage device you can temporarily hold the stuff that will backup.

After you get the new HDD in the PS3 and it is running good, just use 'RESTORE' with your USB device and all your settings, saved games, and profiles will be transfered over. This is also the best way to get around the copy protection garbage because if you do BACKUP and RESTORE, it will bypass all the protection restrictions and your saved games will be moved over just fine.

If you have large downloaded content that wont fit on your USB storage device, you will have to download it again from the PSN store. I believe you get lifetime redownloads, but i'm not sure?

I just recently (as in 3 days ago recently) put a 500 gig hdd into my 60gb ps3. I did the simple replace the drive, format it and move stuff over via usb. By doing it this way, copyrighted material (songs, dlc for rockband, psn games themselves and saves for game like NCAA football, LBP, Demon Souls, Heavy rain) are not able to be copied to a usb. The only way to do that is a full back up by tethering it to another ps3, or an external hdd.

Edit: by doing it my way I had to redownload all songs from Rockband and Rockband 2, psn games, and any dlc for games that I have purchased, such as LBP and Uncharted 2 skins)

You can also do a backup onto a USB Flash Drive, provided you have cleared enough space off the PS3 and the remaining amount will fit on the drive. Game Data was no problem to delete since it is easily put back on next time your put your game disc back in and it installs. The important one to get, obviously, is your save games.

Crap.. I wish I would have read your post before I did it my way. It sucks not having some of my saves. Hmm.. Still may just reformat the 500 gig and do it your way.

I bought a 16gb flash drive. Wonder if I cleared all game data if that would be enough for all game saves, copyrighted stuff etc..

Dude, you should be golden. I did mine with a little 4GB one, if you can believe that.

Do you know ifit wipe the stuff I already have saved to the usb?If so, then I need to take my new MLB 10 save from the 500 gig, put it on the 60 gig then backup. Same for my Gow III saves.

Or will it create like a ps3 file on the usb stick?

I really dont think it will wipe your USB when you do the backup. I've never seen the PS3 wipe a USB drive, and i use them all the time.

If you want to be extra careful, you could just make a temp folder on your PC desktop and copy your save games that you are gonna manually transfer before you do the actual format. Then, you got them somewhere else just in case the unexpected happens. :P

They are just regular files, so they can be copied to the PC just fine.

thanks man.. If I knew it was that easy I would have done it this way. My way was pretty easy, but sucked I had to download stuff. I was pretty bummed about the copyrighted stuff. Ooh.. but if you delete the game data, won't you still have to redownload dlc since it saves to the game data file?

No problem.

Yea, it looks like you would have to redownload DLC (ya, it is in the Game Data area), but maybe you wont have to clear off very much stuff since your flash drive is 4X bigger than mine was. If you can make it with your DLC backed up, then all the easier.

I recently put in a new hard drive and backed it up with an external hard drive. Needless to say everything was there when I put my new hard drive in...

But even if you can't find your downloaded games, themes, etc you can always go to your purchase history in the Playstation Store and redownload themand not have to pay for them again...

I have been trying to upgrade my HDD in my PS3 and have not had much success. When I try toinstallthe newhard drive, it says, "Cannot start. The correct hard disk was not found." I have an externalhard driveand have already backed up all of my information from my playstation 3 so I could restore it after I put the new one in, but the new one is not getting formatted like Sony's website with instructions says it should. Any suggestions/tips on how this can be fixed?

this upgrade is simple! but i had troubles at first because i didn't realize i needed to download a file. anyway you need to go to sony.com and download the firmware version 3.21 on you computer, then make a folder called PS3 and inside that folder make a folder called UPDATE and yes they must all be capital letters! then put the file you downloaded in the update folder. finally copy the ps3 folder to a usb flash drive! put the flash drive in your playstation 3 after the new hard drive is already installed and turn it on. a screen will come up with a bunch of stuff written on and you need to press the start and select buttons at the same time on your controller and make sure the controller is connected with the usb charge cable. hopefully it will find the update on the flash drive and then you just follow the instructions on screen and wah lah you have a 320 gb ps3! and that my friends is very cool! :o)

you need a portable hard drive case or you need to hook the new hard drive to your computer and create a partition and format as FAT32 if you format to NTSF it will not be reconized by the ps3. i ordered a potable serial ata to usb hard drive case when i ordered my hard drive it was only $11 then i put the new hard drive in it and hooked to my computer and used a free disk partition manager to create a partition and format to FAT32! then i took it back out of the case and installed into the ps3 and i was good to go. then i used the portable case to put the old ps3 drive into and use for an extra external storage drive for my laptop. good luck! :oP
