I can buy a used PS3 slim for 180-200 dollars or a new one for 299 dollars...

The PS3 I'm looking at is about a year old for 200. Is it worth it to save the 150 (tax included) or should I just buy a new one? I'm asking in terms of life expectancy.

I think it would be better to just buy a new one.

If you have the money then new, but if you're tight on money get used.

I'd say buy new. I would never buy a used system. Maybe a used game here or there but never a new system

Well, if the used has only been played for a year it should have lots of life left? Right?

Not if the previous owner would drop kick it every time they got killed in Black Ops. Unless you absolutely trust the owner and know that it has had a good home, I would buy a new one.

I hope I don't get in trouble for this, but I would say to go on Amazon if that it is possible. I got a used Move bundle $300; I haven't had any issues at all.

With hardware reliability not being all that great, I would by new if possible. Atleast you get a warranty if it dies quickly on you. You can never tell. I remember when I was a kid (I am now 33), I would take my SNES and throw it across the room every time Bison in SF2 on the hardest difficulty level would beat me. On another note, SNES' were built strong.. :D

Considering that once a ps3 breaks it can be repaired but is destined to break again, I would go for a new one. You don't know if the used had any problems so it may be safest to get a new one.

Personally there is no way I'd buy a used one, just save up a bit more and go new, you'll probably be thanking yourself down the road when the used once decides to **** out on you.

It's all about risk tolerance, and in this case, the risk is comprised of unknown factors (i.e. who had the PS3 before? how did they use it? why did they sell it? etc). If you're not afraid of such unknowns, and/or are generally not too pessimistic, buy it used. If you are, but it new. Pretty simple, really--on paper at least.
