I have purchased a ps3, just havent' recieved it by UPS yet, i want to hook the ps3 up to my monitor, problem is my monitor is NOT HDCP compatible, so i'm going to do one of two things, bye another monitor than is HDCP compabitble along with some kind of switch (different people have told me different things, some say i need a dvi kvm switch others say i need a dvi video switch) and sell my current monitor on ebay, or purchase some type ''adapter'' that will allow me to use the ps3 on my current monitor. My question(s) are this, if i purchase a new monitor what exactly is the type of switch i need to purchase with it? is it in fact a dvi kvm switch or is it a dvi video switch, or is it something else altogether, i know nothing about any of these switches just what a couple of people have told me, when i've googled in dvi kvm switch or dvi video switch they are very expensive, can somebody tell me which one i need and where i can find a very cheap one? also can somebody tell me if there is such a thing as an adapter that will allow me to use the ps3 with my current monitor, i've heard there is an adapter available but that it's very expensive (the cost of a new monitor) but the way i see it even if it is as expensive as purchasing a new monitor looking up the prices of those switches it would still be cheaper for me to buy an adapter probably, anyway, someone steer me in the right direction and tell me what i should do, i would prefer that if there is an adapter available out there somebody just tell me where to find it.

If your monitor doesn´t support HDCP then you sould, like you said, either get an adapter or change your monitor. I would strongly recommend that you get a monitor with an HDMI input or a DVI one. But if you´re not willing to spend too much on an adapter and your monitor has VGA connection (which I think it should support), you can get a tv tuner (like this one: http://www.directron.com/vstv1440rnb.html) and hook your Ps3 through component cables to it (which allow you to run it in HD), then hook up the tuner to your monitor through VGA. That should do it. But if your monitor supports DVI-D (digital) then you should get a DVI to HDMI cable and connect it to your Ps3 (on the HDMI side) and to your monitor (DVI side of the cable). The manufacturers say that that tuner supports up to 1080i, I'm not sure if it would work in HD through VGA though, although all signs point to yes, since it´s the only way you can connect the tuner to the monitor. On the other hand, you could also try to find a good converter, but I think it would be a little expensive. ATEN has a lot of great products. Here´s their site, you should browse it a little for more info: www.aten.com. Finally, I´d recommend again that you get a monitor with HDCP support, so you´ll be able to get your Ps3 running at its full potential. I got myself a 28 inch lcd monitor some time ago with HDCP support, VGA, component, composite and HDMI inputs, hooked it up to a SYBA HDMI switch (up to 4 HDMI inputs) - which I plugged to the monitor´s HDMI input, hooked up a VGA tv tuner to an ATEN VC160 VGA to Dvi converter, then used a Dvi to Hdmi cable to hook that up to the SYBA switcher and finally hooked an HDMI dvd player with 1080p upscale to the switch. I also hooked everithing to a home theatre, and since the monitor supports 1080p and beyond you get an outstanding video and sound quality for a lot less than an HDTV (plus 28 inch is more than enough for gaming, tv and movies - at least for me). The tv tuner remote control can also be used to run the HDMI switch, so you´ll get to control everything with 2 controllers (the dvd player and home theatre are both sony and their controllers have Bravia link, so I actually use only one of them). What I mean is that getting a good LCD monitor could be your first step to getting a decent setup without spending too much money on the process. I hope I was helpful. Good luck to you!

Thanks everybody for your input, I'm MAYBE starting to understand a few things, really though if you guys think this monitor will work http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3120552&Sku=H94-1911&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=6ckR.coHy2A-LANX21h5f642ZvA7MFwL_A i think i will just go ahead and bite the bullet and buy it, and then sell my existing monitor on ebay, i figure when all is said and done i shouldn't be out more than $50 by the time i recieve the money for my existing monitor, can you guys tell me if the monitor in this link would work, it has ''duel inputs'' a dvi input and a vga input, thanks again.

That one is pretty affordable and has DVI input. It should work, no doubt. Haven´t heard of the brand though. Hope it all works out well, I think you can get up to 1080i with it. Oh, and not to be herassing or annything, but try linking your links when you post them, it makes things easier. Good luck to you, hope you get your monitor up and running real soon!

so you're saying just because a monitor has a dvi input it doesn't automatically mean that it's also HDCP compatible? and where on that page did you see that it was or wasn't HDCP compatible, because i didn't see in the specs anything about HDCP..

He´s right. I didn´t notice that it doesn´t support HDCP. And since Dvi only transfers digital video data, those bult-in speakers would be useless for your Ps3. You should hook your ps3 to another receiver through optical or RCA (stereo). Try with Viewsonic, last time I checked they had a few affordable monitors with hdmi connectivity and built-in speaers (I think it was the X series).

Good luck

There´s an option right besides the "toggle fullscreen mode" button that allows you to instert/edit links. It´s two options away from the emoticons button.

the name of the screen is SAMSUNG 2253BW Black 22" 2ms(GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP Support 300 cd/m2 DC 8000:1 - Retail

so its already written that its with hdcp.

my advice for u is to go for the offical website of any copration and see the information of the screen and this is a link of the screen that have hdcp and its telling u the information http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/features.do?group=computersperipherals&type=monitors&subtype=lcd&model_cd=LS22PEBSFV/XAA

Ok guys, i think i get it now and i have a link to a monitor i'm almost sure will work, it is both HDCP compliant and has duel inputs (i'm guessing the duel inputs will allow me to hook up both my ps3 and my pc to the monitor and switch back and forth between the two some way is that right? because that is why i wanted duel ports in the first place) anyway here is is http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3169545&CatId=2776 also what kind of cable do i need to run from the playstation to the dvi input on the monitor? and finally if you guys think this will work is that all i will need, just the monitor and a cable? (sorry whoever was telling me about how to insert a link, in my box beside the emoticon picture there is only a help button, no button that allows me to insert a link)

You´ll need a DVI to HDMI cable in order to connect it to your Ps3. Keep in mind that the built-in speakers will be useless since DVI only carries digital video data. You´ll need to hook your Ps3 up through optical cable to something else, such as areceiver. Also, you could connect your Ps3 trhough DVI (in fact through HDMI usind an HDMI to DVI cable) and your PC through VGA with that monitor.
