Using PS3 as DVD/BluRay player not a good idea?

I'm thinking about buying a PS3to watch Bluray and dvd's first and foremost and then for gaming. I was told by the guy at Best Buy that 80 gig and higher PS3's have a plastic lens that doesn't last when you use it a lot to watch movies. He told me the older 60 gig model used a glass lens that lasts much longer. Is the "BlueRay lens" I read about?

If I can't get a 60 gig PS3 he suggests I buy a stand alone Blue ray player just to watch movies. It's an expensive solution when I can get a new PS3 Slim that does it all for 299$.

Any of this true?

I don't think so... I would slap the person who told you that. It's not necessarily true... PS3 is awesome for Blu-Ray.

It sounds to me like all they are trying to do is sell you more stuff so they can make more money.

Indeed. The sales people at Best Buy are liars. They have some of the worst sales tactics ever. Such as taking an HDTV and setting it so the picture looks terrible and then putting it next to one that has their "optimization service" or pushing $50 HDMI cables that you can get for $5 or changing the lighting in the room so that it makes certain TVs look better. They are crappy. I don't to their unless I know what I want to buy.

Just get a new PS3 for it. You can find better Blu-ray players with better DVD upscaling cheaper than the PS3, but none of those have an awesome games library, so there's your answer :P

It was pretty much THE best player on the market for ages and had a major advantage in that it was fully upgradeable through firmware, while a lot of the first players lacked the ability to upgrade, so they were stuck at Profile 1.0. There are standalone players that beat it for Blu-ray playback and DVD upscaling (the PS3s upscaling ability is pretty average by today's standards), but it's still one of the fastest out there, although the slim has been reported to be slightly slower than the fat models.

I did not know that :) still im pretty happy with the playback and upscaling on mine :)

Edit: that looks totally sarcastic and is not intended to :)

I use it for a ton of movies and that statement is flawed because you should be using the disc about the same as playing a game. He didn't know what he was talking about ignore him sit back and enjoy Iron Man, The Dark Night and Transformers in crisp 1080p

The ps3 is great blue-ray player, but by today's standards, all its good at is fast reading/loading. There are much better stand-alone blue-ray players, that would shatter the ps3, but they all read the discs slower.
