No, Dragon Quest is more of an RPG... or Dragon Age if that's your thing. VC is 90% strategy with some light RPG and shooter elements

It's kinda hard to describe with just those two...

First of all, you say you don't like strategy games so I feel like pointing this out first... This is nothing like an "ordinary" strategy game such as Starcraft, Civilization etc... I can't stand strategy but I love VC. I'd dare to say that it appeals more to rpger than strategists.

With that being said, the rpg elements feel rather light. Different weapons feels rather limited and the level up feature is kind of "meh". There really isn't much stat customization at all. You can however, customize your tank quite a lot and different characters have different pro and cons and the more you fight, they gain and (lose also I think?) different of these pro and cons while also gaining "friends" in your team, which can strengthen your squad. These characters are also charmy and I've several times chosen looks/personality over pro/cons, it also helps a lot that if one of those character die and you fail to help them within the time limit they're gone forever. :P

You really should get it though, it's very good and remember, you can save in the middle of the fights!!! (phew)

It's a strategy game in the fact that the game play revolves around knowing where to put which characters in what type of positions so that they'll be successful.

It's an RPG game in the fact that it's very story heavy and character-centric, not just a bunch of nameless grunts/units. Your characters will also develop in statistics and abilities as you go. Most of the micro-managing of resources you'd see in strategy games aren't present, rather it's all about developing your characters.

In both cases it's turn based.

So I don't really think it's more so one or the other. I just like to consider it a "Strategy-RPG". I think it has the elements that people look for in a good JRPG, as well as the elements that people look for in a good strategy game. If you are familiar with the Fire Emblem series I'd best describe VC as a real-time (sort of) take on Fire Emblem.

Ever play Hogs of War? Its kind of like that. I doubt you've played that though, so lets just say its more of a tactical game.

You place units. You get a set amount of moves before your turn is up. Select a unit, zoom into 3rd person view. Move around and shoot. Pick another unit, etc. End turn. Wait for AI to take its turn. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

It's a really good game. It's honestly not very hard at all. There's a few missions that had me a bit frustrated, but one you figure out the right strategy, you can even down the last boss in single turn.

Basically, imagine Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea, except when you move a unit, you zoom into a 3rd person mode. And instead of swords, you get guns that you actually have to aim.

The only thing RPG about the game is upgrading equipment and units.

Both, but I think it's more of a strategy game with RPG elements. Best game on the PS3 though regardless of what you define it as.

i would say its more of a strategy game over an rpg. Outside of missions theres very little to do in the form of interacting. I love the game and if your not into strategy like im not then you should still love it.

Bit more of a strategy game imo. However it isnt your "typical" strategy game. I did not pick up the game for awhile because of the same reason as you: not a fan of strategy games. Really only enjoyed the Luminous Arc series on the DS until finally getting Valkyria Chronicles. Turned into my second favorite game on the PS3 and one of my favorite games in general.

May still not be your cup of tea but if the story and style interest you, I strongly recommend giving the game a chance.

Yep. But it's still a great game even if you aren't that big of a strategy fan, the story drove me all the way to the end :)

Watch some reviews, that should help. And try demo. Demo is very short and without story but it does show the basic mechanics. Demo is basically a tutorial level.¨ And as many people here say, it is a very underrated game. One of my favourites.

Yea, I've always called it an srpg that isn't the usual "tactics" type of srpg and that goes into real time during the third person / shooting portion. It's probably one of the most interesting and unique games on the ps3.

I'm very picky about games and VC passed my high standards.

If you're willing to wait for the network to go back up, I'm pretty sure there's a demo you can try out.

Strategy - RPG elements are very basic. The game isn't too hard outside of one or two levels.
