Ladies and Gentlemen. I have held out for as long as I can but I have to invest in your helpful advice, I have searched high and low for answers, but still can't really find anything that's even remotely helpful. I'm having some really strange download speeds, living in NZ (New Zealand) Broadband is running at around 4 - 5mbps normally, getting decent download speeds on the ol' PC and laptop fine, no problems. However, on the PS3, its another story, for example, system and game updates - unbearably slow. 38MB Game updates take forever...etc On the complete opposite side of things, from the PSN store, content/demos/downloads - download at rocket speed. Thought I'd test the speeds out, and tried downloading the bourne ultimatum (or whatever it is) demo, which is roughly 1.6 Gigabytes, and that was going to take roughly 120 minutes. Just a TAD faster than the tiny 38MG game update! From super slow to light speed. WHY!?!?!?! On a side note, the other day, downloading System update 2.70 (not during high traffic loads, not on the release day) - The ps3 was mega MEGA slow. So thought maybe the PC would have better odds, no such luck, this was going at a snails pace also (4 - 5kbps) and took about 8 hours to finally download, I only did it on the PC because I was able to see how fast and how long it would take, was slow on the PC, the PS3 and on the laptop, so naturally I did a speed test, speeds were fine, and then test downloaded something else, and got good speeds, so why on earth are sony's servers going so damned slow? I can't find anybody else with this issue. Before going on, let me assure you router/PC/PS3/Laptops are all configured correctly, and are working fine. I'm just getting some very strange variances.
I have the exact same issue. Maybe updates are hosted in a different location and have a different bandwidth. I found that downloading updates from the New Zealand PS site was fast tho.
It could be because the servers are used for more than just downloading demo's and updates. This could cause speeds to varey depending on what's going on at any time. I have a very decent DSL serveice and some things with smaller amounts of data can take longer than things with larger amounts of data. I think Sony is always trying to add more severs and updateing the present servers. When things are being changed it could cause a single server unit to try and take care of traffic of other server units in the server pods. Just a thought.
