I bought a ps3 from japan over ebay.
It no longer reads any discs.
I am in australia and they wont fix it.
I have no where to get it fixed in japan.
If i had have paid a few more hundred
dollars i could have bought the australian
60gb in the first place and i would be fine.
By the looks i have to buy a whole new console.
I just thought i would rant..not happy jan. :(

You need some Sweet Ass to brighten up your day (even if it's where the sun don't shine!)

But aside from that, have you had any contact with the eBay seller? If anything sometimes they may be helpful, might help you send to sony jp or something. How long have you had the system? Or did the seller cheat you? If he did best you can do is complain to the seller and report if he ignores you. You'd still be screwed but might as well. Too bad though, how many discs have you tried that haven't worked?

CAll Sony Japan and see if you can ship it to japan yourself to get it fixed...might cost some money but save you in the long run...or just sell the broken one on ebay (youll still get a few hundred for it) and use that money towards an australian/NA version.

Sorry to hear that... having your machine breaking on you can be quit annoying, specially when you don't have any way of getting it fixed but then again you only got your self to blame if you bought it in Japan and not where you live.

You should have at least got it from Play-asia they would have had some kind of warranty,

thats the trouble with buying from ebay though,

also with the sales at the moment there are 40gb deals getting as low as $600

I think what scott was trying to say about selling it on eBay was not to rip someone off. You could just say that its broken, detail the problem, say you don't know what's wrong and why you can't get it fixed. There are people out there who will buy broken stuff like that, either cause they themselves can fix it and so get a ps3 cheap, or they can mess around with it knowing it's already broken and whatever else their reasons are. I believe you can get quite a bit back like this actually. Not near a full amount, but decent enough i would say.

Or you could just try hounding sony au to try and fix it. Say you got it on travel, before it came out in australia and such. Trying to show support to sony. Say it's still their brand product, or say you'll get an xbox instead(and convince your friends to get an xbox as well) or something :P. Hey, worth a try i would assume.

Sorry to hear that man, I would file a complaint with Paypal. He might of take all the money from his account, but still file one with paypal. They are pretty good about trying to get the funds back, if worse came to worse, swap it for another system. They might check the box and find out what's wrong, only do it if you got the black version.

You got the black one right or did you buy the bright white one?

Ya I probably should have been a little more specific about the Ebay comment. Definitely wasn'ttalking about ripping anyone off. There are plenty of "broken" PS3s on sale on ebay that still sell for a decent amount of loot. Better to just cut some of your losses now and see what you can get back from it then buy a whole new one. I wouldn't be worried about Ebay either as thats where I got my PS3 and it works great :)

Also, like Sphire said you should try and bug the AU Sony first before you sell it. Come up with anything you can think of and tell them you will never support another product again, you buy games every month, your very upset, yada yada yada...and they might actually do it for you anyways.

so, if you buy a system off of EBAY you have no warranty on the system? I bought a brand new, unopened, sealed 80gb off of ebay and thus my concern. I've read before on this site that as long as the unit is still within the one year period that Sony honors their warranty, regardless...but that may not be true I guess. Anyone know?

DUDE, how could you buy one from Japan?! What a mistake!!! This is why i never buy electronic gadgets on internet, or from another country. It is best to buy it your self in some shop and if something happeneds you know where to go.

Sad to hear it but you made big mistake, try to find some service(if there is such) in Australia

Buying on ebay is a gamble, a BIG gamble that is why I only buy small things on ebay, like games. So if I were you I would post that broken PS3 back on ebay in the Japanese section, say what's wrong with it and tell them that they might be able to ship it back to Sony for a new one.

That should get you back some cash to get a new one in your own home town.

did they give you the receipt with the console? if not then you are screwed too

if they did and it is the same region console that you live in then you are fine and have nothing to worry about

its japanese and i am in australia as previously stated..

im pretty sure i will hunt around some local console repair shops
and see what they can do ..if i cant come up with anything then
i will just sell it on ebay as damaged goods..
this has definately been a learning experience..
and yes i plan to buy a 60gb pal..like i should
have done in the first place..oh well

if its australian you are fine..if its japanese then you are in trouble..the predicament i am currently in.
if anything goes wrong..australia PS wont fix it because its japanese.. and japan wont fix it either.
This was JapansPS response:

Due to the different language, voltage standards and the system
issues, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has implemented
a territorial-based distribution and support system for its hardware,
software, peripherals and network services.
We SCEJ only manage the area inside of Japan.

we do not recommend all our users to use any of
our Japanese products outside of Japan, because it may lead up to a
serious accident and the malfunction of the console.
Accordingly, we request our customers to purchase our products from
the region they live in.

i think i will sell it as a broken ps3 on ebay..most of the ones i have seen
go for around $100 which is better than nothin and it just sitting there.
There is a 60gb pal ps3 in my region etc. for $835 so i think thats they way to go.

There's a guy in canada that works on ps3's and hes really good.. I dont have any of his info off hand but you can look it up online... He does repairs for as cheap as 40 bucks but if he has to replace the blu-ray drive it will cost you $299 because they have to outsource for the drives... just thought I would let you know.... I'm in the same boat though... I broke mine by accident and my life has been hell without my ps3. Can you believe that I have to actually find things to do? hard to believe isnt it?

That is actually smart... Minus the fact that it's wrong, and there is a possibilty they can find out it's a different region system.

Except that the serial number on the one in the box won't match the one on the outside of the box. So you better try this someplace where the employees are stupid.

I've heard people do it Wal-Mart all the time. They don't check. Most stores in the US just send the product back to the manufacturer and let them deal with it.
