yeah thats ps3 video 9 it scales it to 1080p but if its not 1080p it will look like crap

but thats an option you can change it to any size 4:3 or 16:9 just use MPEG-4 SP or AVC AVC is a bit high quailty SP is way faster and all most the same quailty

there are too many variables to answer your question. 1. CPU speed and ram 2. how long the video is 3. what setting you use 4. what codec the video you have is using it depends on the length of the video more so than the size of the video. anyway, from my experience, it is quite fast. i have also used winavi, and it is an extremely fast encoder, so expect times to be longer, albeit, not A LOT longer. as for the quality, in 2-pass mode, it is quite good. i've converted some 720p videos and used a bitrate that was close, in 2-pass mode and it turned out very good.

not with ps3 video 9 just do mpeg-4 sp i got 3.2 ghz P4 HT does a 2 hour movie in 700mb in 30 mins i did a 340mb file its 40 mins took 18mins so it sould do 30 mins for him i did it on my old computer 2.0ghz p4 did it in 32mins

i know but lets take the average it took me 40 mins to convert adivx file to mp4 with winav, the only thing that bugs me with winavi is the quality...

and i assume that program uses a built in codec like winavi

problem here is i wanna convert tons of movies total of 20 gb stored on my pc and put them on the ps3 hdd

without alot of quality loss, fast converting and smaller files...

np buddy you can put the videos in a queue and go to sleep i did season 1 and 2 of house 48 eps i think only took 6 hours :) they didnt lose much quailty at all it looked the same all most if you do AVC it will take alot longer but lose no quailty

yes it does matter. the CPU speed always matters when you're encoding the length of the video means theres a certain amount of frames to be encoded, therefore, the more frames, the longer it takes with ANY encoder. what setting you use, as in how many passes you use or what bitrate you use. or if you have a dual core CPU, you can enable 2 threads making it go faster. the codec that was used in the source matters because, for example, a 1hour video using Xvid will be MUCH smaller than a 1hour MPEG2 video, as Xvid compression is much better than MPEG. trust me, i've encoded A LOT of stuff, and i've used over a dozen different encoders for other purposes, and i have a good eye for quality. to me, i can see difference between the source and if i use single pass mode. 2-pass mode looks nearly identical to the source. if you don't notice a difference using 1-pass mode, then use it. as for me, i have a dual core CPU, and with dual threads enabled, the encode times arent that bad even with 2-pass mode anyway.

ready set now first you said its cpu now its both ram and cpu? like i
said this computer 3.2 ghz P4 HT and 2gigs of ram other computer 2.0ghz
P4 1gig of ram it was only a 2 min dif

and btw you cant do 2 pass mode on ps3 video 9 buddy so if you used it you lied

dude... go to ANY tech related site or ANY video encoding related site and ask ANYONE if CPU speed and the amount of ram matter in encoding time with ANY encoder. or simply copy and paste what i said, and see what they say... i'm not even going to waste my time arguing with you as it seems you're too stubborn to face fact.

ok, sorry for blowing up. its late ;]. you saying your times with a faster PC are the same as they are with a slower PC is pretty much saying CPU speed doesn't matter. it's simply impossible to be true. its a FACT that CPU speed plays a LARGE role in encoding speeds, as does RAM. there are so many reasons why RAM affects encoding speeds as well, but its just too late for me to want to list them and explain.

@ legalize3, not many encoders encode to MPEG4/AVC. i actually use PS3 video 9 as its the best one ive tried. like i said, single pass mode is quite good, but i can definitely see a difference between 1 pass and 2 pass. if you have a video with a lower resolution, the difference may not be as noticeable, but i've only converted 720p HD videos so far, so its easier to spot differences. mind you, i had to compare them side by side to see a difference.

yes it does matter.
the CPU speed always matters when you're encoding
the length of the video means theres a certain amount of frames to be encoded, therefore, the more frames, the longer it takes with ANY encoder.
what setting you use, as in how many passes you use or what bitrate you use. or if you have a dual core CPU, you can enable 2 threads making it go faster.
the codec that was used in the source matters because, for example, a 1hour video using Xvid will be MUCH smaller than a 1hour MPEG2 video, as Xvid compression is much better than MPEG.

trust me, i've encoded A LOT of stuff, and i've used over a dozen different encoders for other purposes, and i have a good eye for quality. to me, i can see difference between the source and if i use single pass mode. 2-pass mode looks nearly identical to the source. if you don't notice a difference using 1-pass mode, then use it. as for me, i have a dual core CPU, and with dual threads enabled, the encode times arent that bad even with 2-pass mode anyway.

so what program do you use or is the best, fast and easy way to convert various files to mp4 including vob files ?

hes using winavi like he said just use ps3 video 9 i use mpeg-4 SP cause its fast i barely notice a diffrence but its there and its fast house eps like 400mbs only took 15 mins and went to like 230mb and like i said you can queue them and use MPEG-4 AVC for higher quailty but it will take longer but your gonna sleep so it dont matter

@ legalize3, not many encoders encode to MPEG4/AVC. i actually use PS3 video 9 as its the best one ive tried.

like i said, single pass mode is quite good, but i can definitely see a difference between 1 pass and 2 pass. if you have a video with a lower resolution, the difference may not be as noticeable, but i've only converted 720p HD videos so far, so its easier to spot differences. mind you, i had to compare them side by side to see a difference.rahzel54

tell me how you got 2 pass please cause its just not there in ps3 video 9

Settings -> new or edit profile -> general properties -> encoder. plus there are many other settings you can tweak. theres also already profiles that use 2-pass mode. ill post a screen shot in a few. i think the author of ps3 video 9 made it so its easy and straight forward for beginners, but theres kind of hidden settings for advanced users. here, you can do anything from set the bitrate of the audio/video, select the amount of channels, set how many threads (again, for dual cores) etc.

i have no idea what you just said... ??? 2 pass mode does 2 passes. why are all of them 1-pass? i'm kind of tired, but you really didn't make any sense there. and i think you misunderstand me when i said the codec matters. i don't mean the codec you choose the output video will be. i meant the codec of the source video matters in determining encoding time. different codecs are more efficient at compressing data. therefore, say an XVID video of the same length will be a lot smaller than an MPEG2 video.

hehe, i was thinking you were maybe using a different version. 2.15 just came out a few days ago. i actually haven't used the older versions, so thats probably why there was confusion.

It seems to me that you don't have the latest version of video 9, that has two pass and two pass advanced as default profiles as well as Quicktime MOV HD input.

i'm curious, why does ps3 video 9 output to formats like HD MOV, FLV, MKV and "VideoWizard"? i thought the ps3 only supported MPEG4/AVC and MPEG2? i tried playing an MKV video and it didnt work.

i use AVC for everything. i use 480p for videos that have a resolution of less than 480 and if they're HD videos, ill use the 720p profile. i use 2-pass mode because i'm a quality nut. i also edit the profile and use some of the advanced settings, like i try to match the video and audio bitrate to the source and i enable 2 threads because i have a dual core processor.

welp like you said just make your own profile and make every thing original and all it will do is keep all the quaity sound every thing and just convert it to mpeg4

ill just try out the default profile  avc 480p 1024kbps sterieo/128 kbps

if it turns out to be a good conversion of the original then im happy

the default doesn't work very well unless the size of the video is at 480 already if the video is less than that it won't look great unless you edit the profile and match the resolution that the video uses before you convert you may want to do a 2 pass as well.
