Ive noticed over the years that the small manual that you get with the game which is basically the intro and credits and instrution booklet have become less and less involved over the years. Ive always as a ritual anytime i buy a new game read the manual front to back and ive been noticing lately that alotta game give you a brief overview of gameplay mechanics and the credits. what im saying is i just remmber when the manual was 25-30 pages long with character bios screenshots interesting tidbits and sometimes a developers note i hope were not reaching an age where the subtle nuances of videogames are being phased out Thoughts?

I skim through the small manuals, but if they are lengthy, good reading material when I am on the toilet

I love getting comprehensive video game manuals. It saddened me when late in the PS2 era games like Metal Gear Sold 3: Subsistence were shipping with black and white manuals. Very disappointing.

Games like Call of Duty have manuals that are like 5 pages...horrible.

I compare this to how some CD's have the lyrics and other features in their inserts while other CD's have absolutely nothing. Certain games that I know I will cherish like Metal Gear Solid 4, I will buy the Strategy Guide.

EA and Activision have a thing going where they have like a limit of 10 pages to a manual... Most of the time they are around 5 pages.

I've been noticing that I've been reading manuals less and less. Like you, it used to be a ritual for me to read them. Every night I get a new game, I'd replace the book I was reading before with the manual of the new game and read that for the night. ...not so much anymore :(

I feel the same way too, however I prefer having an in-boxart than a detailed manual IMO. I hate staring at a blank white sheet of paper whenever I open the box up:?

it usually depends on the dev/publisher. capcom seems to be doing things right with their manuals, the manuals for re5 and sf4 are well done.

Manuals for GTA has always been decent, fully colored and lengthy, manuals to fighting games like DOA has been well done too, including character stats moves etc.. fully colored
and the WOW manual is like a small booklet thats 208 pages long

Yes, I always read manuals. RE5 manual was a little tricky to understand, as there was so much in it. :P

True i remember in the ps1 days the manuals were FREAKEN THICK AS! though that was probably due to having different languages in em :D

It's probably because you're growing up. I have noticed the same thing.

CoD4's manual is so small that I have to close the case a certain way so that it doesn't get caught.

I think video games are becoming less involved and just more... easy. It probably coincides with the number of casual gamers that are around now.

I hate it when the manual has no brief story of the game and characters' bios because that's the only thing I read in manuals.

I prefer learning the game while I'm playing it.

man you guys actually read those things? only manual i ever red is the 1 from rome total war(which was really fat btw) other than that all only thing i ever do with manuals is when i buy a game, open the box for the first time, take out the manual, i smell it then put it back in and never touch it again but i hate it when a game doesn't have a manual though, thats just not OK

You must not play PC. PC games come with huge manuals half the times. I only read what I need to out of them. Once I know everything I need to know, I end up throwing the manual in the trash (PC games only). I keep the manuals in the case to my console games. I don't keep the big boxes that PC games come in, so I end up with no place for the manuals is why I toss them, but keep console game manuals. If the PC game comes with a case like a console game and the manual fits in that case, I do not toss the manual.
