Having purchased the "Kitchen Sink" model (3G + WiFi), I am impressed and can safely say that this is in my opinion a worthy successor to the PSP. Unfortunately whilst sounding good on paper when you add up the hardware specs, I honestly feel the Vita is somewhat of a "Hit'N'Miss" affair as Sony have made some poor decisions on the firmware end of the unit that I feel do not embrace what this technological marvel is truly capable of. These are just some examples of Hits and Misses... Hit - Innovative controls - Note: The Analog sticks are perfectly fine... Just like the Original Dual-Shock and PSP, it all requires a certain discipline when mastering the controls. Hit - Processing Power! - a good example is comparing Modnation Racers for both PSP and Vita... When creating tracks the I found PSP crashed round the time you even tried to piece together anything more than basic. The Vita holds its own well as it tries to give it's "Big Brother" (PS3) a run for it's money. Miss - Substandard web browser - On wifi it's about the same as using a PSP... No Flash and rather sloppy compared to surfing on the iPhone. Miss - 3G Connectivity - Whilst this might be a hit for you hip pocket, it's really a miss in the way of making the most of what you have... The the 3G is useless for downloading content from PSP as the download is capped to point where it's a waste of time demo hunting and shopping without a wifi connection. But not being able to play via 3G is definitely as waste of good tech. With the usage level this little monster will burn a hole in your pocket just by sitting in your pocket with the amount of data it chews, which is why I would strongly advise signing your Vitas up over a Pre-Paid contract - No they're not locked into a single provider, I checked with SCE Australia and while Vodaphone who they're going with Vodaphone is the "Preferred" carrier as it is written on the pamphlet... meaning you can sign with whomever you want (at least here Down Under). Overall Sony has got a stunning design in terms of hardware, but how they've chosen to use it does little in showing how much they appreciate their own creation. Sony really need to consider a redesign in the Vita's firmware and launch it as a major system update if they are to truly make the most out of this incredible machine.
On a final note - As for competition I truly believe Vita's "Real" adversary is NOT the 3DS, but is to come from Razer - Currently known as Project Fiona. In saying that the Vita is no handheld, but a Gaming PAD (Smart Phone, Tablet PC, etc).
I love my Vita. I actually like it better then my 3DS already, i cant stand the 3DS screen anymore, but Revelations and Metal Gear is still awesome.
I agree with saying the Vita is amazing, at first i was skeptical about getting it. Wasnt very convincing with all the reviews out there. But after buying and playing with it for about a day now i can say its actually amazing. The Graphics are amazing, Uncharted has blown my mind. It just a cool little device. It has everything you need, Browser, Netflix, multiplayer capability. For anyone who isnt sure if they want to pick up one, i say if you have the money to drop on it and a memory card, go out and get one you will be impressed.
I agree completely. I've owned this thing now for three days and already have enjoyed it more than my 3DS over the span of an entire year. Although there are a few minor gripes I have about the system itself, thus far it's lived up to if not surpassed my expectations. And boy, do the games look and control great! It truly is like having a mobile PS3.
This ^ gotten far more enjoyment out of my vita in a few days then i have out of my 3DS in the year i've had it. I love my Vita it just craps all over my 3DS.I agree completely. Despite pre-ordering a First Edition Bundle and going crazy with anticipation in the weeks leading up to launch I must admit I waffled quite a bit and wasn't really sure how Vita would fit into my lifestyle as a mature gamer who hasn't played much on his PSP or DS much over the last 12 months or so...preferring to save my gaming time for the consoles after the kids are tucked in (35 year old dad of two lovely daughters). I watched countless youtube videos and reviews of gameplay and opinion and it all left me feeling a little "underwhelmed." I'm happy to report that ever since I dug into that little box of joy on the 15th my Vita experience has blown me away so far. I play it ALL the time and love the convenience of playing games of this quality whenever and wherever I want. It's so easy to dive in for 15-20 minutes and then just put it in standby mode whenever more grown up responsibilities require my attention. SUre there are little UI annoyances and adaptations that lie ahead but I really can't get enough of this thing. That will become even more the case when MLB The Show with Crossplay releases in a couple weeks. It's an amazing piece of tech and I hope it does well because I am hopeful the dev community sees potential for it and the library of games continues to grow from it's very sturdy foundation. BonoBoy
That's pretty much my sentiments exactly; I was very ambivalent and thought about not going through with it as I just tend to like shiny new technology pieces and don't end up using them. I'm also an older gamer so I was glad to see that this really is a near-console experience with near-console controller capabilities. Also, like you, my main concern is future sales to ensure that the machine is fully taken advantage of. So far, it looks like it could go either way; flop or success. It will be a shame if it flops given the power, intuitive nature of the machine, and general homework that was clearly done with designing this.
Way to state the obvious TC! :P
Seriously though, I really hope it doesn't share the same fate as the PSP. After seeing what it's capable of first hand, I can't see how that's possible nor can I understand why third-party studios would be reluctant to support it.
I hope so to, If WRPG's are not going to be supported on this system then the JRPG's will need to, that is why the Japan needs a similar install base as it did with the PSP.Way to state the obvious TC! :P

Out of the box this thing is polished. The screen is excellent, controls tight and a solid launch lineup with a better launch window. Near works well, the Playstation store is fast and very intuitive and the Vitas touch screen rivals my iPhones. This system exceeded my expectations and no doubt is a true next gen portable that should mature and have a ton of functionality as a complete gaming and media device. Best handheld potential hands down. Just wish remote play is patched soon and am not impressed with battery life. The second gen Vita games will definitely take advantage of the quad core A9 and SGX543MP4....just beast. Dave_NBFIt really is a nice little handheld. Be on the lookout.
