Falcom is making Legend of the Heroes: Trails in the Flash for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. While the game doesnt support Cross Buy (meaning you get the Vita and PS3 versions for one price), one DLC purchase will work with both versions of the game.

...

Falcoms upcoming RPG The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash is set in Thors Academy, a prestigious military school in the Erebonian Empire.

As a member of Class VII, you will take part in school activities, including history lectures, military training, and home ec.

During a lecture, the instructor may suddenly ask you a question to test your knowledge. If you answer correctly, your evaluation will go up. siliconera

Here's the game's website: http://www.falcom.com/sen/product/ps3_vita.html

Interested? Read more at Siliconera:

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/08/06/legend-of-heroes-for-ps3-and-vita-supports-cross-saves-and-cross-dlc-purchases/

Looks like a combination of Final Fantasy VIII, Persona 4, and Atelier games. It reminds me of Final Fantasy Type 0, which remains unlocalized. Speaking of localizations...There are no plans for a localization. So, my question, is would you be interested in this JRPG? Did you play the PSP game Trails in the Sky?

Yes, yes, yes,yes and yes!

Totally interested. As for why I am interested? I played Trails in the Sky FC on the PC (and about 1/3rd of Trails in the Sky SC). Currently playing Trails of Zero: Evolution for the Vita (42 hours in) and loving the pants off it. Love it enough that I'm looking to get Trails in the Flash day one.

I love Trails of Zero because the game is really refined and player-focused:

i. All sidequests are designed to give unique (awesome loot) and/or give you new areas to explore and/or

ii. The sidequests inform you of the various actors, rivalries and history of the world (which go towards making the core narrative easier to follow as well as acting as foreshadowing). I've not skipped a single side-quest so far because there is less fetch-questing/running around than the previous games.

iii. Awesome features: no random encounters, enemies run away from you if they are weaker than you and if they are really weak you can attack them on the field and insta-kill them without even having a formal encounter (yes, you still get the loot).

These design choices are all part of a design direction that looks to continue in Trails in the Flash. Also helps that the characters are really awesome in the game (each one is really likeable and has an interesting back story,as well as brilliant chemistry between them). It is gonna be interesting because all the characters in Trails in the Flash are confirmed to be in the party from the start (much like Type-0), but unlike SE, Falcom is skilled at writing casts of likeable characters (instead of a collection of amnesiac anime cliches).

Aside: I really do think that Falcom should consider making the games episodic because:

i.They are already episodic (broken down into chapters)

ii. Faster localisation times as only parts of the game have to be translated at a time

iii. Safer for the publisher because they can dip their toes in with a low(er) localisation cost as they are translated a chapter at a time rather than a whole game

iv. More room for profit as each part can be sold at a slight mark-up rather than the entire going from for £30. It would only be a £1-2 more for the users per chapter but it would mean more profit for the publisher/developer (and would further mitigate risk).

edit: You can probably tell I've been thinking about this game a fair bit :P

Ahaha. The Vita version of the UI doesn't look finished in those screenshots (the Vita version has a button prompt for 'L1'). Hopefully this game will be fine when it is released. Trails of Zero: Evolution got a lot of flak for being released in an unplayable state (you couldn't get past a certain point in the game fairly early on) and wasn't patched for a month.

Certainly loks interesting. I'm all for supporting RPGs on the Vita especially, so I'd be down for it.

Yeah, these pics are from old siliconera threads, I also rescaled the latter pics to match the size of the first pic. And the game is getting released September 26, I'm pretty sure. I would absolutely love any publisher who takes this game under its wing.

Slightly off topic... What happened to Trails in the Sky 2? They released part one on the PSP (which I picked up), but there were supposed to be 2 more parts. I did not want to start playing it till I got the next 2...just go straight through. I have enough of a backlog to keep me busy for as long as it takes. Your save data was supposed to carry over. But it looks like they are never coming??? Also (since it is in the OP), anyone know if FF Type 0 is dead as far as an English release?

Lol for a second there, I thought that this was a new Valkryia Chronicles hahaha xD. But hecks yeah I would get this :). A revamped Legend of Heroes game? I'm definitely in. I believe Legend of Heroes was my very first RPG on the PSP to begin with, definitely interested in seeing how much the series has changed :)

Officially they are designated as 'L' and 'R' (because there is no L2 or R2). Take a look at some Vita games and you will notice it when you look at on-screen command prompts.

A new video interview has just gone up on Youtube.

Here are the key points:

-The is the first trails game to be set in the Elbonian Empire.  Up until now the empire has been treated as 'the enemy'.

-The protagonists are students at Thors Military Academy School.

-In this school the students are divided into classes based on their background; there are classes for the nobility and classes for commoners.

-However the class the protagonists belong to (Class VII) is a unique mixture of the two; should make for an interesting set of personalty clashes.

-Many characters from the Elbonian Empire have appeared in the Trails series before and some will reappear here as party members (unclear if permanent or guest).

-As with other Trails games all the NPCs have unique names and personalities. Detail has even been paid to their familiy structure.

-The party is made up of 6 characters.  4 of them are controllable battle participants and the other 2 are support types.

-The support members can also swap out with frontline party members mid-battle.

-You can attack enemies from behind on the field to get a pre-emptive strike.

-Observation: As with Ys 7 the enemies are weak against different types of strikes (cuts, blows, shots and one other type that I can't quite make out at this video resolution).

-New 'Link' system (character affinity system).  Characters who get along well with each other help each other out in battle (follow up attacks, taking a hit for you).

-There are also story events in game that boost character affinity if you trigger them.

-Supports cross-save between PS3/Vita versions of the game.

I got all excited when I read the words Legend of Heroes, because I was hoping for some news of the follow up to Trails in the Sky. Really want that sequel (although I thought there were rumours floating around about the series getting a PS3 release).

Still, taken on its own merits this one looks pretty good.

Just a heads up. Amazon Japan is selling the game for about 1500 yen off (including the special editions). If you pre-order it at that price they promise to ensure that when you are debited it will be the price you pay.

I've never known Falcom to make a bad game.  I'm a huge fan of the Ys series, and I picked up Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the PSP, though I haven't started it yet.  I'd definitely get this when/if it gets localized.  XSeed has a great working realtionship with Falcom and they've brought over almost every Falcom game this gen, so fingers crossed...

Fair warning: Trails in the sky is incredibly slow to get into the interesting plot stuff. Good game, just takes awhile to get interesting.

Interesting fact. After their initial reveal line-up of Vita games at Sony's conference, Sony showed off a reel of upcoming Vita releases. The cool bit? Trails in the Flash was the first game in that reel. Front and centre stage. Looks like the game is getting quite a bit of attention.

Awesome! :D lets hope sales will be high out there. Looks like it will be a while before it even is considered for localization, since we're only on the first sequel that's coming out next year.

Ah, speaking of which. I just finished reviewing the PC version of Second Chapter (FC spoilers). This should be the version we get coming to Steam. You can check out the review here.

The game is out today (still waiting on mine to be delivered from Japan). The game has been completely slated by almost everyone who has played it. 1~3 star reviews (not troll reviews) are flooding Amazon Japan (especially for the Vita version). It turns out that the game has some major loading issues. 10~30 seconds just for a fight or leaving/entering a building/room. On top of that there are also a lot of areas where there are loads (for instance if you are going from the roof of a house to the outside, you only need to spend around 7 seconds walking out but it takes around 1:40 worth of load screens before you are finally out of the house). A lot of people are dropping the game or simply not playing it until the promised patch arrives. And even then I worry about just how much a patch could fix things. Was there some streaming tech/caching that the developers couldn't get done in time? Incidentally the PS3 version loads about twice as fast but still takes ages (and requires a mandatory install). Interestingly enough no one has trouble with the content of the game itself, it's just highly unenjoyable because of the frequent, long load times (very apparent when you are travelling in areas made up of many smaller areas).

Chances for localization are about 10% at best. Sure, you could. Keep in mind to be able to play a game like this you're looking at around 2 years of study.

Chances for localization are about 10% at best. Sure, you could. Keep in mind to be able to play a game like this you're looking at around 2 years of study.

TBH Mega has a good chance of learning the language well before release given how long it takes to translates these games :P That and it would be a great life skill in general. I'd say go for it! Update: A patch (the 'first' patch) is going to be released on the 3rd October. It is supposed to cut down load times. We are probably going to see multiple patches fixing various issues (further decreases to load times, reducing frame rate problems).

That's a depressing thought. I'm a fan of a lot of western stuff and all(Completely done with COD, though) but it's getting depressing how entire genres like jrpgs are dropping out of the market. I miss varied catalogues. *sigh*

you can blame that for western gamers not buying a lot of JRPG, if games Japanese games dont do well here, they have to intentions on localizing their games to westerners since it wont bring them in money
