In short, I'd like to get a bigger hard drive in my 60GB model ps3. As it is right now, the standard backup that Sony does gives no real options for me to be able to select what I want to backup - only to back up everything or nothing. And as a result, the backup, even when I trim/delete ALL demo's and stuff, is still way too big to fit on any flash memory that I have to put in it. So, I tried the alternate of at least backing up my saves, so that when I can get the new drive, I could simply deactivate this ps3 (for the time being) for the game installs and stuff, and simply reactivate it next when I start with a fresh hard disk. But now I realize that I have some games that have that **** retarded copy protection, which prevents me from doing that. Which means my only choice for properly backing up all that save data... is to do the full backup. So, what should/would I need to do here? Only idea(s) I've had so far are: - get an external enclosure. Put new hard drive in that. Run Sony's backup operation to that drive. Shut down PS3. Put new drive in ps3. Put original drive in enclosure. Use restore feature when it starts up (if I could do that - as I said, I have yet to do this before). All should be well(?). - get a real external hard drive as well as an equal-size mobile hard drive. run backup to external drive. Put new hard drive inside. Run restore operation once ps3 finishes formatting new internal hard drive(?). FYI, I don't currently have the ps3 with me, as I didn't want to risk those **** at TSA trying to steal it from me, since I'm on my holiday vacation. But I was thinking of then coming back with a new hard drive for the ps3 when I return home if any of the after-christmas sales are good. So, for those of you that have already upgraded the hard drive in your ps3, what should I look for, or do in this situation? Which will be the least expensive way to be able to retain my data and do what I need to do here?

No ideas or suggestions? I was figuring with the amount of people here, someone would have done this successfully by now, and could at least share how they were able to do it.

You would need a external HDD to back everything up too, then restore the date on to your new ps3 HDD that's been formatted by the ps3

What about putting the original 60GB hard drive in an enclosure? Could the ps3 restore from there, then?

No such thing near my home. And I don't know of anyone that would have a spare external. That's why I was thinking that I could get away with the external enclosure for the original ps3 hard drive, put that in there, and then run the restore operation to get its data in the new hard drive.

You can't restore from the original drive.3 drives. The old one, the one you're backing your data on, and the new one.

if you just take you current HDD and put in an enclosure and connect in to the ps3's usb port, it most likely wont read it. Also you would need your HDD inside your ps3 or at least connected to the port inside the ps3 to back up the data to a usb drive.
while it would be possible to back up the data to you new HDD that's in an enclosure that's connected by usb, when you put it inside the ps3, it will most likely be formatted.
i don't see a way to do it other then with an external HDD or really big flash drive.

Well, that really sucks. I don't get why Sony had to allow these **** asswipes be able to copy protect a game save. Encrypting a file is one thing if you could move it, but making it impossible to be able to back up your saves like this is just ridiculous. I'm basically looking at $200 to get an appropriately sized external hard drive and new drive just to do this fiasco... for a 100-something KB file because it just HAD to be copy-protected!

okay, maybe you can try it,.

you can back up ps3 data into your new HDD in enclosure first and then copy those data into your PC's HDD.

remove 60GB from ps3 and new HDD from enclosure.

insert new HDD into PS3 and insert 60GB HDD into enclosure.

format your 60GB and copy data you saved from pc to 60GB external HDD.

and restore thosedata to your ps3.

so in that case, you might not need 2 external HDD

Ok here's the deal. If you back your data up onto your new hdd you'll lose it. The ps3 requires a harddrive format when you install it, no matter what. You absolutely have to have another hdd for the backup. get on amazon and buy a western digital hdd for like $50 and a $5 hdd enclosure. in the end, you'll have twoexternal hdds

This seem like it will work, unless the restore data can not be moved. Its your best bet other then buying an external and a HDD.

An iPod of most sizes will work too, just don't use iPod Touch or iPhone as they won't work, and with a little BS you can do the back up to that. Surely you know someone with an iPod, if you don't already have one, that you can borrow?

I just used my iPod video 30GB yesterday to do this, had to delete some game data, and move a ton of movies from the PS3 to my computer, but all my PSN games/game saves/songs/movies/pictures were restored off the iPod without too much hassle. It froze on me twice, first boot up on new HDD, and once during the restore but I found everything in place after rebooting it. Sync'd up my trophies and I was done.

Yeah, this guy is right. If you were to back up your data onto your new HDD, it would be erased when it's formatted after you put it in the PS3.

For clarity, how much data do you need to backup (in GBs)?

even when I trimmed out ALL of my game demos and stored images, I think it said it wanted to back up about 19GB worth of data... *sigh* this is ridiculous. All this I'm having to think about and plan around because of ONE game with a 100-something KB save file won't let me just back that up to an SD card because it's copy protected. Even if I'd lost the videos on it or had to redownload games I own, that wouldn't have been a huge deal (thank you, FIOS :D ). but one stupid file ends up being the source of all this misery for me. :(

You absolutely need a third hard drive for the data to be backed up. The worst part is that it only will save your save games and any installs or downloads from the Playstation Network need to be reinstalled/redownloaded. It's a pain, but at least your PSN account has a history that you can redownload from. I don't remember what guide I used, but Google it and you'll find all the info you need.
