There's a rumor in circulation that hints that Incognito Entertainment's Warhawk for the PlayStation 3 will be getting some major updates for the holidays. Based on what we're picking up, Game InformerMagazine's latest issue (the one fronted with Brutal Legend) contains the first details of an upcoming game expansion pack, scheduled for release this December.
The new Warhawk expansion pack will reportedly carry new vehicles, including a dropship that can airlift vehicles across the map, and can provide for heavy fire support thanks to its complement of missiles. Aside from the dropship, we're still unsure of what else this rumored Warhawk expansion will contain, such as whether it will carry more maps.
We note that if this rumor is true, we may be looking at Warhawk's very first game-expanding update (the previous were just for bug-fixing). Keep on the lookout for updates regarding this matter.
In a recent interview with GamePro.com, Killzone 2's producer Steven Ter Heide talked about how the game needed not only the strengths of the PS3 to stream and process large amounts of data but it also needed the Blu-ray to store all the data in the first place.
He mentioned how the trailer that they showed at E3 and at the Leipzig Games Convention "topped out around 2 GB." It was mentioned before that the models used in those trailers contained the same amount of polygons as an entire level of the first Killzone. The large amount of data is simply a requirement to deliver on the game's extremely detailed visuals.
Ter Heide explains:
It is not a luxury to have Blu-ray, but rather a necessity, as compression only gets you so far. [...] Also having the CELL and SPUs means we can offload all of our physics processing to an SPU, or process AI using the SPU's. All this processing power just means we can add more detail and create that Hollywood-type realism we're after.
One other thing about Killzone 2 you might be interested in: you can jump this time around, but you won't be able to fire at the same time.
No matter how much SonyComputer of America keeps mum about the 40GB PS3 SKUs, evidences of US stores stocking up with those units just keep popping up all over the place like mushrooms. Gaming site Gaming Bits posted a couple of shots taken from a Target retail outlet, which shows the 40GB "PS3 hardware" displayed in their price scanner with a pricetag of US$ 399.99. Like the snapshots taken from Best Buy's database, there's no indication when the units will be placed on the store's shelves.
Taking into consideration the above information, it looks like Michael Pachter's assessment of Sony's gameplan about the 40GB SKU PS3s is indeed dead on: Sony is most probably waiting for the 60GB SKUs to phase out before launching the newer 40GB units.
Is Pachter right, or does Sony have another plan in mind? Do stay tuned to find out.
