Didn't Sony say that when they introduce the new 80 gig model, that the 60 gig would be discontinued and the price drop is only to get rid off consoles?

And does the 80 gig have crippled backwards capability or something in that sense?

Please don't flame, I don't follow the news too well, and I'm especially ignorant of ps3 news, I'm thinking of getting one soon however and I'm just wondering.

The 60gb ps3 will be on sale until the current reserves are completely sold, probably around or after xmas.

After this point the 60gb will be dissolved, and the 80gb will almost assuredly move into it's 500$ price point.
The 80gb does not contain the same backwards compatability that the earlier ps3's have. However, the software emulation is about 97% compatible on ps2/ps1 games, so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

the 80gb doesnt have "crippled" backward compatibility, from what ive heard, its around 85% of all games work, while the 60gb has around 97%

Depends. Do you want to pay $100 more for 20 more gigs and get Motorstorm, and have less backwards compatability, or save $100, have 20 gigs less, and have complete backwards compatability?

If you plan on playing your old PS2 games get the 60g but I would wait for the 80g if I could buy my PS3 again.

Yes, Sony discontinued manufacturing the 60GB PS3 model and the 80GB will be taking its place. And I heard the 80GB uses the Emulator Engine which plays about 88% of PS2 games, while the 60GB PS3 uses the Emotion Engine which plays about all of the PS2 games.
