So I just finished playing Dragon's Crown recently, and I saw that there was quite a bit of controversy over the way many of the female characters were depicted in the game. As the reviewer from Polygon put it, "I found its over-exaggerated art style alienating and gross in its depiction of women even as it shines in building a world of fantastic monsters and environments..."

I can see where she's coming from, and many of those female depictions were *cough* quite extreme

But I'm curious to see if the art style of Dragon's Crown bothered you guys at all? Did it affect your overall gaming experience? Or did you find the game enjoyable despite this?

For me, I wasn't really bothered by it, even my sister (who's an adult) just thought it was hilarious.

It doesnt bother me at all, i think its quite interesting :D
And obviously the art of Dragon's Crown tries to keep an old vibe to it.
The game in itself is a mix between old and new and it creates
quite an interesting experience through its art.

I loved the art style. I loved the awesome style of the women. but also in a non gay way i also liked the men were all huge as heck. I Dont see why people would complain. The exaggerated art style really made the game stand out and unique.

Why are people complaining about the bodys of the women, what about the men? Sure i see it, i know i could never get that huge. Does it bother me? not in the slightest. Why would girls be bothered?

I loved it, made the game unique. Also, I'm glad they stuck to their guns and did not care what the media would think. More games need to do this.

I had no problem with it but I'm ok with anything, as long as it's what the designers wanted.

I did think it was pretty funny that they spent time talking about how the character art shouldn't be found as offensive, which is true, but then they did add other women in the game that would easily make sense to be offended by. It makes me wonder if they were like, "You find this offensive, we haven't even gotten to the offensive part." Or if they got annoyed by the complaints and were like, "I'll show you!"

I'm offended at those people who are offended at the female designs... none of them would ever complain about the men's exaggerated designs... it's disgustingly biased and double standards like this show how the real offenders are the ones who would criticize this game because of the "sexist" design.

There was no real controversey.

Just a couple reviewers who got their panties all twisted up because either 1) they are douche politicllay correct assholes that feel they need to stomp on everything in the world till it is flat and lifeless in order to make sure that no one is offended and we all are forced to only be exposed to pre-approved products that will upset as few of people as possible, or 2) They just wanted some attention so they tried to make something sound controversial and tried to paint themselves as the righteous douche asshole politically correct hipster dick that they think everyone will look up for saying sexism is bad publicly.

I find it interesting that the gross over-sexualisation of women is considered an 'art style'. The weird body proportions of all characters, that's an art style. This?

Po8LSG4.jpg?1

This is so totally uneccessary. You see a man like that in a video game recently? Didn't think so.

the men have the same proportions though, seriously people getting feelings hurt over over this is outrageous. if it were only men in this game but the same scenarios would this discusion even be a problem?

Yes I am bothered by some of those images but I ignore them. And if people really stop to think about it there is a ton of that stuff in a lot of entertainment today. Is there like some unwritten rule somewhere that says oh if a girl spreads her legs so-and-so amount it is defined as this-and-that? As I said, I actually don't like it but the game is solid and movies and other videogames do just as much. I also am offended by curse words in anything, I think its stupid and juvenile but I hear it all the time everywhere. Best thing I can do is ignore and not use it myself, no use in making a big commotion about it for it being in a video game.

maybe there's some really late game content that's way too much that i just haven't seen yet, but i like the art direction. call it gender roles or genre reference, but each gender has had certain roles (whether in society or in the fiction that reflects it). women have often been the damsel in distress, the seductress, or just plain old sex objects. rescuing the princess wasn't started by nintendo. men have had their own roles, subject to knightly codes, burdened with the responsibility of action. a lot of games, movies, and tv shows we experience do this much more subtly than dragon's crown except they do it in earnest.

i don't think the intent of vanillaware was to arouse one group or shun another. it was to point at one facet of fiction and have a laugh. i mean, the reaction i've seen from people hasn't been about how attractive all the characters are, but rather how silly, ridiculous, or offensive they found them to be. if they wanted to titillate, there are certainly more tried and true ways to do it (like, you know, making the character proportions remotely identifiable).

people are welcome to not find it amusing, but the joke isn't on women.

Who cares, the game is fun. If I was offended by it, I wouldn't have played it, nor bought it. Simple as that. I try to keep an open mid about these things, but I fail to see a justifiable reason to bash this game because of it's art style/ creative direction. Hell, in some weird way , maybe it is exaggerating the female's sexiness.., So dafuq what?! It's their creative vision! They aren't bashing women, nor being racist! O_o... There's no legit reason to hate on this game, it's not a bad game at all. The gameplay, graphics, and narrative are great. Move on to another game if it's not your cup of tea.

Some people don't realize that kicking up a fuss about other people kicking a fuss about fictitious characters in video games is not being any less petty. ;)

Have not played the game yet, but Coolyfett is really looking forward to it. Honestly Coolyfett is kinda tired of the feminism and political correctness. Let people like what they like. No one is force to play Dragon Crown, if you dont like it, dont play it. Talk with your feet and wallet.

Yeah it kinda does. So I didn't buy it, pretty simple. Not that the over sexualization of specifically either sex bothers me but the art style in its entirety just doesn't click with me.

The sorceress has very wierd balloon-proportions, and doesn't seem right. Wouldn't that cause too much backpain, or reduced protection against enemy arrows? Other than most females being depicted as sex objects and wearing generic overly-skimpy clothes, there isn't anything wrong with the art direction.

The art in Dragon's Crown is as impressive as it is praiseworthey, save the female sex objects. While playing, I couldn't help but feel like a strong majority of the female art was tasteless. I find it humorous that one must be labled as a politically correct, hyper-feminist for offering a differing opinion. I am neither a feminist nor one who spouts politically correct drivel. I don't want to see men or women in overly sexualised positions while playing a game. If you want sexualised images, join your partner in the bedroom.

Great game though! : )
