it makes a huge difference in sound for movies, and resistance also sounds better. you need a reciever that supports PCM 5.1.

5.1 Uncompressed is the PCM track left un touched. You are getting the audio in full resolution.

All mid-low end entries from the major manufacturers have HDMI uncompressed support. Anyone upgrading their setup has no reason to not let themselves benefit from uncompressed 7.1 sound.

Uncompressed sound is exactly what it sounds like.

It is the origional soundtrack without the compression used in other tracks such as Dolby Digital.

Other tracks are compressed because optical cables (the standard previous to HDMI) only allow for a maximum bandwidth of 640kbps for audio. With HDMI the bandwidth available is much higher, something to the tune of 10Gbps, so uncompressed audio, which requires about 1500kbps, is possible.

If your reciever does not support HDMI, you can not used PCM uncompressed 5.1. The best you can get is PCM 2.1 if you are using an optical cable.

yep I was using the bitrate for PCM in CD audio, my mistake.

Still technically the required bandwidth for five channels of uncompressed audio is around 1500kbps. Just BluRays uses way more.

Bottom line, you want PCM uncompressed, get a HDMI reciever and some damn good speakers.

agreed, with the proper recevier and speakers uncompessed PCM kicks some major butt....the 7.1 PCM mix on Resistance is sooo good its scary...literally

Not sure about this. You are correct in saying that mid-low major manufacturers have HDMI uncompressed support (if there is HDMI as 5.1 PCM is available with HDMI 1.1) but thne you go on to say uncompressed 7.1 sound, which is only on HDMI 1.3 I believe. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=738511

6) Level 5 receivers that process 7.1 channels of uncompressed lossless HDMI PCM formats. Examples: All latest HDMI Denons. Yamaha RX-V1700 and higher. Pioneer Elite 81TXV and higher.(possibly more, see annotation).

Annotation:

The only current 7.1 PCM HDMI source is the PS3 game "Resistance: Fall of Man". Receiver manuals are notoriously vague on HDMI audio support. Therefore, there are very few confirmed level 6 receivers. Most level 5 receivers are rumored to be level 6 receivers. Contacting the manufacturer is the best way to confirm level 6 receivers until people begin testing with the PS3.

Therefore 5.1 PCM is easy. 7.1 PCM not so much. Things have changed since that first post in that thread, which is probably more then you ever wanted to know. So read the whole thing.

Maybe you should read some home theater basic FAQs before sounding even more pathetic. Plug your hdmi cable into your hdmi capable receiver. If you are listening to your system through your tv speakers then you should upgrade your sad setup.

Well this is something that sony didn't put on the ps3 that about all other blu-ray players have, the outputs for analog 5.1 uncompressed sound. Theres 5+ outputs, where each cable represents a speaker, and you plug them in sorta like seperate stereo cables. Alotta people don't have newer receivers that do hdmi, so those analog outs are really needed.
Heres a pic of what a normal blu-rays player analog uncompressed 5.1 sound looks like :

I guess i'll wait till blu-ray players go down, and get a blu-ray player like that. My receiver sounds good now, and i don't want to buy another one that i'll only benefit from hdmi.

What make and model receiver do you have? I was also surprised by the lack of analog connections for people with older setups.

Here's the link that explains more about PCM audio and the receivers that support them: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=738511 To me, the best option to go is Onkyo TX-SR604. It's the 2nd cheapest ($~370) after Panasonic XR-57 (~275). The problem with XR-57 is that it can only pass 1080i not 1080p. Most other receivers would start from $500-$700 and above. Note that most receivers currently only support 5.1 PCM. Only high-end receivers (>$1000) can process 7.1 PCM. Not that there are many media out there with 7.1 PCM (Resistance is one of them). Most (all?) current Blu-Ray movies only have 5.1 PCM.

Are you talking about mid-low end receivers? To my knowledge, none of the Home-Theater-In-A-Box setup can process HDMI audio, they are all "pass-through HDMI", meaning they don't do anything with the audio. Lower end receivers don't do this either. Beware of the phrase "pass-through".

More importantly if you are using HDMI for audio it has to go to your audio reciever to get PCM Uncompressed audio. If it's just plugged into your TV, then you're only getting stereo anyway. If you connected your PS3 to your reciever with optical or coaxial cable the best you can hope for is Dolby Digital. If your PS3 is connected with the red white cables, you can get simulated surround like Pro Logic.

In the PS3s audio settings you will have to specify what cable is used for audio. You will also have to select "bitstream" instead of "linear", when using anything else other than HDMI for the audio else you will only get 2 channels.

There's nothing to set if you hook your PS3 directly to your TV. Unless your TV has optical out etc. Do you even have an audio setup?

You need a receiver that is capable of HDMI switching and 2 HDMI cables. You will run an HDMI cable from the PS3 to your receiver and another cable from the receiver to the TV. That is the only way to get uncompressed PCM sound, and you also have to have a receiver that supports HDMI switching and PCM sound.
