I think it would have been a much better idea if they had implemented it from the beginning. It would be much more convenient if we could charge our controllers while the system is in standby. Another alternative would be for them to make this an option, where you could have regular standby enabled or standby w/charging enabled.

All it would take is to enable voltage pass-through to the USB ports while in standby mode. But it may not be possible since the PS3 needs to monitor the charging status so it can turn off when completed.

Do you think this is possible with a firmware upgrade? Chances are that it's in the hardware and cannot be enabled, but who knows?

the red light is not a "real" standby .... it really does nothing .... the only electricity runing in the ps3 while in standby is for the red light to stay on

Yeah, but some people's computers are not near their PS3. I can see myself going down to play a game, then thinking to myself, D'oh! The controller's upstairs! In fact, I would see myself doing it all the time.

I never claimed it to be annoying. It is just a matter of convenience. I simply think it should have been implemented during design. I already have 2 controllers, but sometimes you play some 2-player or coop and realize you forgot to charge the controllers.

This is just a techincal impossibility. USB devices cannot charge when the USB source is not receiving power... You can't charge/power a pda or digi camera on your computer if the computer is turned off.

However, they already have a solution for charging your usb controllers when the ps3 is off... think it only costs about $30 for the wall adapter kit.

I would like to know where you got this information from. I've never heard it before and I'm interested in the source.

Nice, I haven't tried that. I'll remember to do that next time my controllers low on power and i don't want to leave the PS3 on.

The SIXAXIS controllers charge up pretty fast. It usually takes about an hour or so to charge for me. I think standby charging is kind of ridiculous. What I do is leave my PS3 to Fold while I charge my controllers. That way, I support cancer research and fully powered controllers.

OR

Leave your controllers to charge every Thursday while you're downloading new stuff off of the PS Store.

I don't own a ps3 yet, but i was wondering, does the ps3 let you know if the controllers are running low on battery? or can you check how much % of use do you have left or something?

Yes it lets you know when the battery gets low and after the latest firmware updates you can check the state of charge along with turning the controller off while your not using it.
