Ok, MGS is all about story. Probably the best story never seen in videogames. These aren't long games, maybe 10hours each, so if you can grab the "collection" for about 30$, get it and play em.
the gameplay isn't that great, but still good. It isn't the kind of game where you just run through the people and kill em, you'll never get anywhere like that. You must change your usual way to play for something more "subtile?"*. The last thing you want is to be seen and hear the alarm. The first and second MGS looks like they needed more ideas for the gameplay. there is a lot of : "Go back to this place and come back to me" Especially the first. But still, the story make us forget about that bad point. the game as been a lot compared to splinter cell gameplay wise, don't know if it can help you... On any metal gear game, you can expect about 50% and less gameplay, 50% and more storytelling. It feels much more like a movie you play in, than a game with small videos...
I really hope you see a little more what it's like, beside my bad english...
*I'm not that good in english, i'm really not sure of that word...
probably the series with the best cinematic story ever.
it's tactical espionage action as the game says. personally i wouldn't it compare to splinter cell because that game is not even in the same class as the mgs series. mgs mostly is about stealth, keeping your guard up and proceeding without getting detected...well that's the best way to do it, but that's not the only way to get through the game, just the way i prefer playing it.
it's hard to describe the magic and appeal of mgs, you have to play to understand it.
i too have never played this gameseries before but i really want to =)
btw ive seen youtube videos...and i was wondering does Snake only speak japanese? or does he speak american on the american version of the game?
it depends a bit on the entry to the series. in 1 and 2, each room played out sort of like a action puzzle. you watch the guards' patrol patterns and figure out the most efficient way through the room. 3 played out, more often than not, like a series of obstacle courses with occasional stops to aim a headshot.
as for common ground in all the games, its the choice of whether you want to kill the enemies or not (you always have the choice of sneaking by or tranq'ing an enemy instead of killing them. but hey, if youre bloodthirsty, killing is fun too). this choice plays out most prominantly in 3 (theres a story snip that it effects a bit in 1, but its only minor and effects only in your interpretation for that play through), but i wont spoil it exactly. EDIT: i almost forgot. your end rank for each game is partly effected by how many enemies you kill.
also, each game has a strong narrative that makes you NEED to continue on in the game. they also mix in well choreographed cutscenes as little rewards along the way for progressing. and one thing that mgs does better than any other game is build up to its boss battles (which are often fun and creative themselves). you almost always have a disheartening backstory for that boss fresh in your mind just as you start to fight them.
