I have just purchased a PS3 and have a 42" Panasonic Plasma tv with 2 hdmi ports on the back, I have noticed that Sony has component cables out as well. I am not sure which I should get, HDMI or Component? The TV is only 1080I if that makes a difference.

You don't need to buy a HUGE HDMI cable, because huge HDMi cables are expensive. Just buy a cable that is long enough to reach the TV.

Im saving up for a HDTV, but I happen to have the Sony PS2 component cables and the 6 feet $10 HDMI cable.  My TV right now only goes to 480p, so I use the component.  Sometimes I have access to HDTVs so I can use the HDMI cable.

If your tv supports HDMI then get HDMI, im using the Component Cable [not the one that came with the ps3 the 5 connectors one] which supports 1080p but my tv is 1080i.

all these people saying HDMI makes a huge difference, is that compared to SCART, or compared to Component, because if it's the latter, I'd be inclined to tell you all your lying. Just like the difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p, there really isn't any unless you know what is supposed to have changed

I'm just using the component cables I had for my PS2.  No sense to buy a new cable when this one works just fine and I don't use it for audio. (My receiver only has optical, not HDMI)

We know and so does the OP since he's asking if he should get component or HDMI.  You probably just read it wrong. lol

Do your research before purchasing an HDMI cable.. I have a 47" Westinghouse LCD HDTV with an HDMI port but the PS3 and tv have trouble during the handshake.. This causes the screen to flicker on and off making it unplayable.. There are numerous tvs that have this problem so make sure yours isnt one of them.. I actually went out and bought the $20 Sony component cable last night due to this problem..

I'm using monster component cables. I found differences between the old Sony component cables and my new Monster component cables. Sure there a bit expensive but it makes a difference from the standard ones. One thing that bugs me is when people say there not that big of a difference between SDTV & HDTV. Thats crazy, There IS a big difference. I have a SDTV, but every now & then I use my dads HDTV that goes up 1080I, and man is that crisp. I have yet to see 1080P though (double the pixles from 1080I)

I used the component cables I had connected to my PS2, as my TV is 1080i/480p with no HDMI.  Use digital optical for the audio as well.

Exactly what he has. I use Component cables for my 480p/1080i TV which has no HDMI port. Also use digital optical for surround sound.

I'm running component, i have an upconverting DVD player hooked up through HDMI. I don't have a 1080p TV so componet does just fine, if it was 1080p then i'd for sure get HDMI.
