what do i need to play before FF XIII?

i know this is pathetic, i hate myself for not playing any of the previous final fatasies but what can i do ( i sure as hell can't play all of them now), however, i have played FF X2, i've even played final fantasy one and two, but i haven't finished any of those (oh and i have played crisis core, haven't finished that either, i didn't like it much). Anyway the question is: Do i have to play any of the previous FF games to understand FF XIII's story? thanks you

Nope, not at all. Every Final Fantasy game (minus X and X-2) has it's own story set in it's own universe/dimention. Nothing is required.

no by now you should know that every final fantasy game. has a a diffrent story, characters. but you should play 7,8,9,10 those are really good. also they will let you know what a chocobo and a moogle is :PEXO-grey-fox

They usually tell you. Those and certain character names are the only things that actually cross over from game to game. You can look it up on wikipedia
