Not much, it needs a bigger hard drive.  Why?  What do you think about it?

Mixed reviews. Some want BC. Others don't care. Seems like the ones that just want PS3 games don't mind. But the ones that have a lot of PS2 games will not buy it and instead get the 60GB (even if that means later). I just hope they bring the 60GB starter pack to the US since that's the best deal (has EE, and two games).

this is based on the average consumer who just wants to play the ps3 titles. Im not entire sure what is going on here. Did people actualy think that SONY would have released a $400 PS3 with all features attached, as i certaintly did not. Although the price for the 60 gig is only £69 ($138) more... This is good news to move PS3's for the holidays and that is what sony needs right now. The starter pack is obviously the better deal, but as long as consumers know what they are buying then that is their choice.

I feel if people can save up 399, they might as well wait and get the 499 system. But I think its good for people who don't have the extra 100 or have no intention of playing PS2 games. When it comes down to it its still a steal, blu-ray, wi-fi, and 40 gigs, I wouldn't complain if I had to get 40 gig system.

I think it's a fantastic idea of what they did. This console is for the ones who are too damn cheap to grab the higher priced skus. I had no problem picking the 60 GB sku because of a good payin job but someothers aren't so fortunate, so Sony compensated with removing some features in order to be given to the consumer with less money in their pockets. What's kinda sad about this is that people have been crying on these forums and other places for a cheaper PS3 to buy and when Sony supplies it, people cry even louder just like babies. Did you actually believe that the 40 GB would keep all it's features and be priced at $399 without anything being removed. I surely did not and I hope you didn't either, some things had to be removed or the price couldn't go down. The $399 40 GB version are for people who wanted a cheaper console to play PS3 games... not PS2 or PS1 games. Be glad that Sony dropped the price that low, they usually don't do it that quickly. The damn PS3 aint even a year old yet and people have been crying for a cheaper model, Sony provides and not alot of people are satisfied. I have cousons that are like this... you know what I call them, spoiled brats. Think about the positive here, more people buy the PS3 because it's cheaper means more people to play against online and more developers will jump on the PS3 to make games because the fanbase has grown. More people with PS3 = More games developers will make due to so many people owning a PS3. Makes sense, sacrifices had to be made but now at least one Sku of the PS3 is affordable for the ones who don't have alot of money.

See? This is what I was talking about. Some just don't care about BC. I wish the 40GB had BC so that the gamer had it. But I just read a statment from Ray Maguire (Sony UK Boss) that the reason they took out BC was after polling and being able to use the money saved to make more games and and get the cost down... Here's a clip... --------- Sony UK boss Ray Maguire says that money previously invested in PlayStation 3's backwards compatibility with PS2 is better spent on new game development or helping to support hardware price cuts. "As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace, so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise," Maguire told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz in an interview due to be published on Monday. ----------

Your sig says you own a PS3, why should it matter to you? Hell, the external card readers don't even cost that much and you can hook it up to the Ps3 via usb. I have two lying around the house not being used at all. This anouncement are for people who don't have a PS3 and don't have the money to purchase the 60 GB or 80 Gb (or very cheap people). I think it's a great idea to boost the fanbase, sales, and cause developers to jump on board to make more games because of the growing PS3 community. Ya'll are just not even looking at this as a good thing, alot of people on this forum is only looking at this as negative as possible.

Hell, the guy above my post said he will purchase this 40 GB one over the pleasefixme, that must mean something right? I believe more people will be saying the same thing and grab this great deal which in turn causes more people to own the PS3.

I love the move by Sony. Whatever they can do to get more people to the ps3 the better. I think a lot of people are going to be happy for this model.

I have a ps2 so the b/c is not important to me. The hardrive space should be enough for me. I amlikely getting this one.

60GB model was, and will always be, the best model around. It has near perfect BC because of the EE chip, wifi, card readers and 4 usb slots.

Let's see, it was pretty much made for me: Wired home, don't care about Wi-Fi 4 USB would be nice, but thinking about last gen i don't ever remember gaming with 4 or even 2 people all that much. BC? I sold all my PS2 games when it died, i'm buying a PS3 for PS3 games. (+ bluray and folding) Card Readers? In a game console? Don't care.

Same here, I sold ALL my PS2 games(50+games)and the PS2 in order to get my PS3 at a discounted price. I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games. Yes the library is small for PS3 right now but that is going to change soon. I already have a few games I still haven't beaten and Warhawk pretty much takes up most of my time. PS2 games... don't have the time for that old crap. I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games, just like many others.

EE is supposed to be done with the software on the non-USA 60G, or EE chips if u buy them ealier this year.

So how hard is it to apply the same software on the 40G?

If they are not, are they saying that they no longer care about BC? hence from now on, they will not issue new updates on PS2 titles for BC?

Also feels like SONY is running around in a circle. There isn't much strategy planning shown so far. Why did they discontinue 20G in the first place, if they want to have "lower end" model? Upgrade higher end model all you want, but if you want to have lower end, plz just stick with one. Mass production is the key. Sigh.

But then again, at least it is better than nothing.

Seriously, compared with Microsfot, this move is not that smart. (and no, I am not a xbox fanboy)

Agreed but no one in these forums or anywhere is looking at it that way. Instead, they cry like little babies because they can't play their old crap when cool New games will be coming out soon. It's a great time to have a PS3 with the great holiday line up and it's even greater at an Affordable price point for a PS3! More people owning a PS3, more people to go against online, and more developers making more games because of the growing installed base for PS3;)!

it's a great idea actually. there are people out there who wants to play ps3 games and careless about the card reader and 4 usb ports and backward compatibilities. i own a 60gb ps3 and had it since launch. i reserved 12gb for LInux and that left me with 48gb of space for the ps3. i've stored trailers, tons of demos/videos,100's of mp3s, and3 purchased games on it. i still have 14gb of space left on my ps3. sony made a great move. 40gb is plenty of space in my opinion as long as you're not those hardcore media user. if you're a hardcore user then you should up your purchase to a 60+ gb SKU.

I think it great. Its cheaper, and it has gotten rid of anything it dosent need. Its like the core system for the 360. plus I have a ps3 and I never play ps2 games on it. BC is not needed you buy a ps3 for THIS GEN gaming not last gen. If you want last gen then I think you can get new ps2's in different colours.

Dude, its for good reason. There is absolutely no reason I can think of why the software emulation -shouldn't- work for that model...furthermore... 2 USB ports? The whole purpose of cancelling the 20gb model (Which to me should be brought back at this price point more or less) is -because- they(Sony) didn't want two SKUs and saw how bad the 20gb model was selling compared to the 60gb. Lets not even forget how they made fun of Microsoft because they had to emulate BC and boasted how they wouldn't need to, but even with EE they still required it somewhat. Microsoft was the first to point out how BC shouldn't be important and got a whole lot of hate messages and blows from PS owners and Xbox owners that still like to journey back and how they sold their old systems to get the new ones (like I did for my ps2 to get the PS3 60gb). Then not two weeks later Microsoft says their sorry and will still continue to release software emulation to play games.

So, is BC important for most people the answer is yes. To claim that PS2 games are crap and old and sell em all hahaha type mentality is really really narrowminded considering games are still being released for the platform and it still has alot of rare titles and why it was king in the previous generation even over PC gaming. I honestly wanted to get the 20gb model cause i didnt' care for Wi fi or the card readers but they were hard to find, but it had everything i needed the EE, the 4 usb ports and Blu ray. People pointing out but 20gb was crap for space...the beauty of the PS3 is personally being able to upgrade with other SATA HDs and loading other OSs. I owned all 3 systems, 360, PS3, and Wii cause I traded alot of my old stuff in part with saving (though recently sold my Wii due to lack of interesting games at the moment). My 3 favorite games of all time are Zelda, Metal Gear, and Halo. So, that leaves me with dilemmas I'm an equal opportunity person here not really leaning more toward any other so I flak all of em for messing up on something equally. Sony's had problems with ports and the like but they do sound like they are trying to play catch up.

Point being...This is probably not a good idea and on top of that its only in europe from what I hear at the moment.

it is a great deal, it's the 60gb version except the hard drive, less 2 usb slots and it doesn't read flash memory cards. BC for me is not a big deal, i have a ps2 and this version is still 100% compatible with ps1 games, on the other side ps2 games can be played in the future by software emulation.

40gb disk is enough, if i want to upgrade the hard drive in the future i will go to the store and i just buy a 160gb disk that costs around 70-80 euros.

All this for 399?

imo it is a great deal.

The 40Gb is great news for sony and its consumers, but that that mean tey are going to discontinue the 60Gb model here down under? I hope not..having BC would be a good bonus, how else would i play MGS2 & MGS3?...looking foward to picking one up this holiday season..but if the 60gb is going to be discontinued i may be forced to get one earlier.

I think it is a realy good deal as it has wifi in built and 40 gigs is plenty of space for me plusI don't care about backwards compatbilityas I have no ps2 or ps2 games as I traded them in for my xbox 360. The 40 gig ps3, uncharted, ratchet and clank, orange box, the new sython filter, final fantasy tactics and battlefront renagade squadrenand mass effect are going to make my wallet look very thin. Though with all that stuff I just found my copy of spyro and rayman 2 on psone might have to play through them on the ps3 for a while till my wallet recovers. P.S I am aware that my sig says that I have a ps2 but I keep forgetting to change it.

I don't see how the 40g PS3 can be considered anything but a good thing. Sony wants to appeal to a wide range of gamers, and one of the underlying factors for next-gen buyers is the price. It is a reasonable assumption to conjecture that people who buy PS3 do so to play PS3 games, not PS2 ones. It is of course advantageous from Sony's viewpoint to have all its systems outfitted with backwards compatibility; still, it is a good tradeoff for the average consumer when one takes in the price difference between the basic and the premium sets.

what do u think about the ps3 40GB??Deaho

Great. Sony has more people doing research than I do to know if this is what the consumers want so if they released it like this then there is a need for it. I'm personally happy with my 60GB but no one should be complaining now about the price since it is the same price as the 360 give or take $50 but still with more options.

And to all that complain about the BC with all those people still on the PS2. Here is a brilliant idea... Maybe they can[pause for effect] keep their PS2 and still play those games!!!! It is a cutting edge concept I know to own more than one gaming system.

um what you rather have BC or wifi? because i rather have BC because i want to play socom until the ps3 version and plus most of my friend dont have a ps3 yet so i can play ps2 with them now wifi i never use because it lags bad and plus i got 3 cell phones around me and that will interfer with the wifi anyways just face it wifi isnt perfect unless your on a laptop or something but ps3 no its not and you might say you dont lag 9 out of 10 you must be real close to the router but soon a microwave comes on connection lost that why wifi suck still but in 2010 wifi should be lag free

there are many ppl like me that can't have net without wifi. In my case for example, my wireless router and modem are downstairs, my room is upstairs, my pc, psp and notebook all work online by wifi, i don't have other way, unless i have 20m wires all over my house which is a bad idea as you can imagine. My future ps3 will work in the same way.

or in other words, i can't have a ps3 without wifi and certainly there are others in the same position as me.
