I think seeing something new or revolutionary makes a game next gen. This could be graphics, sound, physics etc. Basically something that we havent seen being implemented before.

A significant jump in the Graphics, Physics, AI, and sometimes the Technology used with the games (Sixaxis, Wiimote, Touchsense, etc.).

Welcome, you'll enjoy yourself here, lots of great people here. And IMO Next-Gen all depends on the physics, graphics, sound, AI, storyline, and of course the enviornment

You can do way more things with the AI, destructable enviornment, and if you have played Splinter Cell Double Agent (don't hate me because I'm sure you haven't because you mentioned MGS) on the Next Gen platforms the jail mission shows WAY more and you do more, on the current gen platforms it doens't show as much and you can't do as much

honestly they say the AI is getting that much smarter, but i dont feel it. halo3 the AI seemed as dumb as halo2s. desructable terrain as been in other games back on the ps2 even. its nothing new. and what do you mean "show more" if your talking about the visuals of the jail levels then i already touched on that. i mentioned MGS because i know more aobut MGS. i dont personally like Splintercell...and wasnt impressed by double agent (you can check my gamercard if your not convinced).

and none of those define what a next gen game is. not all games have the smart AI, not all of them have destructable terrain, etc.

No offense to any one that reads this but Halo has sucked since the first one, so I know those games suck, but it's everyone's personal opinion and I also like it that if a game is going to be long than the Playstation3 has the storage abilitiy of Blu-Ray which should make games that much better

I don't think storyline defines next-gen... neither is the price cuz ofcourse it's gonna get higher, much more effort, time an resources are put into it.

innovation, creativity, imagination, physics, graphics.

So far in every platform i've only seen physics and graphics that can be called next gen, the rest...far away from it...

It's the 1st year of ps3 but i want developers to be more creative mainly and not making games based in other games with great graphics, physics and animations...that's not evolution.

Innovative controls - such as Wiisports

Amazing online integration - like the stuff 360 users are seeing on Halo 3.  Movie saves to the internet, crazy map redesign, etc, etc, etc

Physics - the damage modeling in Dirt

Sound - crazy 7.1 surround sound, who wouldn't love that?

Huge amount of stuff happening on the screen at once - more processing power = more stuff!

AI - more processing power = smart enemies *cough* sometimes *cough*

Finally graphics.  While the Wii has proven you don't need over the top crazy HD graphics for fun, the other 2 consoles have proven that games can look absolutely amazing.  Heavenly Sword anyone?

Innovation and creativity were i think kinda been restriced until now.

We've some some truly GENIUS games but i mean now developers can really do WHATEVER they want with imagination being the only limit.

What i'm trying to say is,the technology was holding it back.

What means a game is "next generation"? Simply put, that they work on a PS 3, instead of a PS 2... That is the main difference, and that is what "next" mean.

Of course most next gen games have better graphics, but that is basically because the system allows it. You can play PS2 games on a PS3 and they will look at least a bit better than if you play them with a PS2 (at least, those that works will). If you check the latest reviews you will find examples of PS2 games that are "almost like next generation", or PS3 games that are "basically the same with some makeup"... That should give you a clue that graphics alone are too subjective to be considered as a "definitive step forward revolution"...

A.I. and physics are ok, but games are not forced to use them to be considered next gen (Resistance's A.I. is more on the dumb side, and Heavenly Sword A.I. is no different than God of War A.I in most parts)

Good post. That sums up much of it. A good next generation game will have as many of the advances listed above as possible, although I believe that any game made on a next gen platfrom (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) is a next gen games, but maybe not a good one; the better games incorporate advances in control, online, AI, physics, scale of the envirements, numbers of players (AI and human), and graphics.

Next gen? You mean "current gen" right? Like right now/ The 360 has been out for two years and the ps3 is going on 1 year now.

I expect quality and refinement in graphics, gameplay and content. For the price they are asking for these games they have to deliver the goods. We have seen signs of it in resistance, heavenly sword, motorstorm, oblivion, gears of war, halo 3, etc.

But why are we still getting crap like NBA08 ( why sony, why? ), Jericho ( have you seen the demo...ug ) ???? This is a second or third generation of consoles of the last 10 years...have they not figured out how to make good games consistantly?

I think the easiest way to put it would be how well the game ulitizes the systems features and capabilities. The Wii has less horsepower than 360 or PS3 but the strenghts are in its motion control and how that is utilized is key. PS3 is a powerful system but just turning out multi-system games on it won't produce next gen for that machine, exclusive titles will show PS3s next gen. And finally 360, well this machine, i believe, is more attractive to the computer gamer, so to not loss the focus on the customer base that 360 has and continue to develop games to that audience. Every system is unique and what next genmeans is different for each.

I think games like Oblivion are the only true next-gen games, because you can play for 200 hours and still have not even seen half the stuff you can do, and it's fully voice acted, and it's a damn beautifal game.

Graphics, the amount of detail in environments (destructible),vehicles, amount of enemies, allies, and other chararcters on-screen, physics, explosion, AI, sound, and multiplayer. I think those are all elements that make a next-gen game stand out from last gen game.

I believe the online play defines next gen console.

Getting people online or at least giving them options to do so will makes gamers go back for another round with real people. Sports, Fighting games would benefit more then others. Right now games like Warhawk are great online fun.

It brings people together. So, improving Online capabilities is a way to go in my mind.

Another aspect would be Innovative games. Fun and enjoyable titles. Little big planet is a perfect example. Graphics can only go as far, of course it's important but it sits on the lowest level of need in my mind.

Folklore has rich environments and it's "stylish" and enjoyable, immerse.

Next Gen needs to bring back the Story. If a game has emotional and strong story behind its visuals then it will be a hit.

Good game is redefined by three things in my opinion: Gameplay, Story and Fun factor.

Graphics shouldn't be the only factor today and in future, they should "enchant" the good story driven game to give us emotional and life-like satisfaction. ^_^

Heavenly Sword anyone? Story, Style, Gameplay and Fun.

Games like will make Next game enjoyable, there is no need for perfection. Streaming towards it is a right step forward.
