What does sony need to do to try and get the PSP popular again?
I would say they need a redesign. If they could make it more comfy to hold, make a new analoge stick and fix the loading times the PSP could be awsome.

Sadly, I don't think the PSP will ever be as popular as Sony hoped. It sounded great coming before launch and everything, then it just lost its appeal somewhere along the line. Sony would have to do something to make the PSP just overall...more appealing.
I like my PSP. But is it worth the money I have spent on it? Probably not
2 words for ya! PRICE DROP! if they make it the same price as the DS you know what people will choose!4dry4n
Sadly don't think its true I was really excited about the PSP but big dissapointment, but there is potential there right now givin the choice I would take the DS even if the same price.

A redesign is not going to do anything but make things worse.
The PSP is still to expensive for a majority of people. A redesign is going to cost as much if not more than what the current PSP is and will not solve anything.
Load times are associated with the UMD drive since it has to stream the information from it.
If Sony wants the PSP to become 'popular' they are going to have to make some serious changes such as reducing the price, properly marketing their GOOD games, pushing their features a lot further, and hopefully, hopefully hire a proper advertising agency. The PSP does not need more alliwantforxmasisapsp.com sites or commercials that obviously is trying to play off cultural stereotypes.

Just give it time... it has a great line-up right now. Sadly I was excited too about the DS but I'm disappointed with it too. I bought it for RPGs because the PSP has a mediocre RPG line up but I found myself coming back to the PSP. I'm playing Diablo on it right now. They need to do a couple of things:
1) They need to refocus their strategy on what they want the PSP to be. If they want to make it primarily a game handheld, then they need to bring games to the system that have lower loading times (something that is slowly getting fixed) and more quality games that are not ports (we need more high quality RPGs...or maybe I just need more high quality RPGs on the PSP). If they want to focus on it being a multimedia system first, then they need to utilize the UMD format to their benefit. First off, movies. As it is very easy to transfer movies to the PSP via Memory Stick, they need to lower the price of the UMD movies to make it something worth purchasing. Either that, or bring some extra features that are exclusive to the PSP.
2) The battery life needs to be extended. I upgraded my battery to a 2600 mah battery and still am not satisfied with it. Perhaps my being unsatisfied is pointless, but like most consumers I inevitably compared it to the DS/DS Lite. As the DS Lite has great battery life while still having enjoyable games to play, I would like the same with the PSP. The PSP already has great games, but I would like the ability to play them for longer periods of time. For those of you who are satisfied with the PSP battery life, that is fine, but with all the PSP has to offer, it would be nice to play with all of the PSPs functions for an extended period of time.
3) As Memory Sticks get better and bigger, what would be great is if homebrew became more mainstrem. What I believe this would result in is that amateur developers would have another chance to become noticed while producing enjoyable games exclusively on the PSP platform. Almost similar to XBLA's XNA, games such as these could be directly downloaded to the PSP through the Memory Stick, leading to lesser load times and longer game play. This would also give more developers familiarity with the PSP hardware and eventually result in better games for the PSP.
I'm sure there are flaws to what I've said, but this is what I believe would improve the PSP's status. I would definitely appreciate any constructive criticism.
